ME is on my laptop.  After a re-boot it takes a long time to loose the hour
glass, then it freezes up.  When I do an ctrl alt del it tells me explorer is
not responding.  I stop the process but it just does it again.  Help with
this is appreciated.  Thanks

How long has this been happening?  I see you mention you have two
operating systems on the laptop - are they in separate partitions and
hidden from each other?  If not then that could be the cause of your
problems.

If the problem has only just started happening it could be due to the
presence of unwanted malware of some sort.  Try booting to Safe Mode and
using system restore to roll your system back to a checkpoint created
before the problems began.

Thanks for responding Mike.

XP was on the computer and not working well.  I re-installed ME which is
what came with it.  I thought this might be the problem but do not know how
to find XP to remove it.  This is when it started freezing up.  What do you
think?

If you tried reinstalling Win Me whilst XP was present then I'm sorry but
you've almost certainly trashed your system unless you were using a third
party boot manager and I rather suspect you were not.  In such
circumstances I would recommend that you boot to safe mode (if possible),
recover any vital files and then start over, format your hard disk and
clean install your preferred operating system.

Thanks again Mike.

I re-installed which said it was wiping clean my c and d drives.  I haven't
yet re-installed any programs or gotten up-dates.  It was after that before
when everything would freeze up.  Should I get up-dates before I install
programs?

Sharon,

I'm not sure why reinstalling an operating system should have wiped clean
your D: drive.  What media were you using?  Was XP on C and Win Me or D?

If you have now clean installed Win Me then it is essential that you
update it as a matter of urgency from the Windows Update site.  The first
patch to install is the 290700 patch for system restore which will then
mean you can use system restore to roll back your system in the event of
getting into problems.  Next install IE6 SP1.  Then, once you have IE6 SP1
and 290700 under your belt, start downloading and installing the other
updates but don't download and install more than three or four at a time
just in case you encounter problems.

Then, before installing any programs update the drivers for your hardware
such as your graphics card.  For these visit the manufacturer's web sites
and download and install the latest Win Me compatible drivers.

Once the operating system and your hardware are up to date and functioning
correctly you can start on installing your applications.

Best of luck,

Thanks Mike, I appreciate all your help.

XP was on C drive and I installed ME thinking it would over ride XP.
Nothing is on D. I did get the updates slowly however I have not yet gotten
the patch 290700.  I have installed IE6 SP1.  There was one driver listed
that I downloaded.  I have only installed Net Mechanic and Norton Systemworks.

Everything was fine at first then started freezing up again.  I might be
misunderstanding clean install.  Are there specific instructions for it for
ME?

It appears that I wasted my time advising you to install the 290700 patch
and you yours in not installing the  290700 patch as the first patch
following clean installing Win Me.  Failure to do so means that you can't
now use system restore to help solve your problems.

I agree!
Mike's instructions were absolutely clear, precise and to the point.  It's
beyond me also why such important steps were skipped.
Ans as Noel says, compounded by Norton.  No one should go there!

Ed

Noel, folks on this board have enough problems without people like you
jumping in with snide remarks instead of offering help which you seem to have
none of.  Get a life.

Do you actually read any of the posts in these groups, Sharon?
I suggest that you do, before carping about my posts.

No Mike, you didn't waste your time, I just didn't see your post before I
re-installed.  I will just back track to that point and not be so hasty this
time. My mistake. Your information has been very helpful to me, thanks a lot,
I appreciate it.

And this time do not, repeat DO NOT, let any disk from Symantec get near
your PC.  In case I haven't made myself clear DO NOT INSTALL NORTON SYSTEM
WORKS on your PC if you want to stand a chance of the PC working.

Mike, what do you recommend in place of Norton?  We have 2 dekstops in
addition to the laptop and both have Norton Internet Security installed (btw
thats what was on the laptop too instead of systemwoks)

Your method did fix the freezing up problem, thanks again.

Anything but Norton which is incompatible with Win Me and in truth not
really compatible with any operating system released in the last ten
years.

Alternatives include the likes of Avast!, AVG, (both with free and paid
for versions), eTrust from Computer Associates (not free but with a one
year free trial
http://store.digitalriver.com/DRHM/Storefront/Company/caconsum/staticContent/PYP
CtrialUS.html
),
NOD32, Panda and many others.  For myself my PCs either run avast! or
eTrust's EZAntivirus.

I'm pleased to read you seem to have solved the problem of your Win Me PC
freezing.

Gekko - 25 Jul 2006 12:25 GMT
Hi Sharon.
Go with AVAST, its the best lil' freebie around and actually
blows paid-for versions out of the water.
(ps, I think the blokes came down on you a tad harsh.)

Hi Gekko,

Thanks for your input along with Mikes on AVAST, I will certainly look into
it.

As for the "blokes", sadly they are there in every crowd and have to be
thought about as who they are, nothing.

Have a nice day!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the site and recommendations.  Its like Norton is God or
something I guess, its all I've ever heard about. I am looking into the
others.

Yes the laptop seems  to be ok now, fingers crossed.  I just use it for
travel but need it to work when I need it too, and the Norton thing is
something I'm glad to hear about.

Your help was appreciate.  Have a nice day!

Sharon,

Best of luck and hopefully you won't be having too many problems.

Regarding Norton and the various components of Norton System Works, there
are probably 20 or more issues that users might experience when using
these programs with Win Me including Live Update which can trash system
restore (it can cause the archive to fill with lots of unwanted files) and
NAV which is totally incompatible with the use of system restore - use
system restore and unlike all other AV applications the user usually then
has to reinstall NAV.

Nicotine free, eh? I quit about one week over two years ago now. As that
milestone approached I was a little dissappointed with the lack of
obviously-improved lung capacity, but suddenly - now that I'm seriously
working out - the difference is apparent, and significant.

Anyway, I'm just posting to point out that Kaspersky is quite possibly the
best anti virus vendor. There's no free version though.

Back in the days when anti trojan programs were emerging, Kaspersky was
*the* one AV whose trojan detection was better than everyone else's,
including the specialists. Since then it has not weakened. There will always
be debate about which is the best anti virus and Kaspersky will always be
one of the two or three names in contention.

Hi Shane, thanks for the input.  I'd never heard of that one either.  Free is
good, but I tend somehow to want to pay, at least after the trial period.  My
son just came in for a visit and he said he's used AVG for years and
everything is flawless with his system.

Good for you on stopping smoking.  Our programs are for the hard-core adicts
who have tried all the other quick fixes which don't work at that stage.  We
treat the person and not the cigarette.  It's a nasty addiction which
involves other things besides smoking.

I have already uninstalled Norton and all his buddies and am working more
smoothly now than ever before.
