Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Sound &Multimedia devices
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch - if present
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers,
hopefully curing your problem.

thanks Noel,
I became so po'd that i did another restore to a date 30 days ago..
(did notice that all the restoral points for the last 30 days had vanished)
that restored the sound..
I'll keep your info handy for the next time.. :o)
Still don't know why it all disappeared couldn't find a cause..
last thing we had done before closing down the night before was visit a
forum board from england..
had noticed explorer had crashed twice earlier in the week when we had used
a wallpaper changing program from our picture viewer.. "Ember MAX"
