Cranked-up the old machine this morning and low and behold all the drivers
to the video (ATI) and sound (VIA) has some how disappeared..

Did a restore to an older date and the machine said there was nothing
different..
So next did a reinstall of the video drivers and sound drivers..  Now the
video works correctly but the sound is still out..
then checked the system folder and low and behold the drivers are there,
they just won't turn on..  ??????

anyone got an idea as to what it is I'm over looking..  ??
Oh,  did a full scan of anti-virus, malware, even registery and couldn't
find anything a-miss..

Tks,
RTS

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Sound &Multimedia devices
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch - if present
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers,
hopefully curing your problem.

thanks Noel,
I became so po'd  that  i did another restore to a date 30 days ago..
(did notice that all the restoral points for the last 30 days had vanished)
that restored the sound..

I'll keep your info handy  for the next time..  :o)

Still don't know why it all disappeared couldn't find a cause..
last thing we had done before closing down the night before was visit a
forum board from england..

had noticed explorer had crashed twice earlier in the week when we had used
a wallpaper changing program from our picture viewer.. "Ember MAX"

Thanks again  Noel..
