I have most of the spyware programs, ad-aware, cw shredder, spybot and
spyware blaster. Recently when I went to accessories, system tools, I was
missing defrag.
I went on a search and located it and dragged to my start menu. After
running scandisk it worked ok. Today I wanted to run scandisk. It was gone
from the menu too so from search, I dragged it to the start menu. I closed
everything but systray and explorer and ran scandisk which takes a while but
finally finished. Then I tried to run defrag with no sucess. Finally did a
system restore to June 28th and lost both of these in the start menu but they
did not come back to system tools. Is pacman eating my files.
Thanks all
Kelly

Kelly, not too sure that I completely understand your report, nor as to why
they keep disappearing, but might be worth 'Undoing my last restoration' (of
the 28th June) if you can, to bring you back to 'today'. Then attempt to
create a new shortcut(s) for scandisk - but don't run it yet!  Set a new SR
point, re-boot and confirm that the shortcut is still there. Then, try
running scandisk. Remember, the scandisk icon in your system tools folder is
(should be) only a shortcut to the scandisk.exe file.

If you are suggesting that scandisk.exe is missing, a 'fresh' copy can be
extracted from the win_17.cab folder. (NB - there is also a 'fresh' copy of
scandisk.ini in win_18.cab)

Mart,
I undid the last restoration. The scandisk and defrag programs re-appeared
in the start up menu. Originally when I clicked on programs, accessories,
system tools, I would find the scandisk shortcut with it's familiar icon and
also the defrag shortcut. Also the following, character map, clipboard
viewer, disk cleanup, drive space, maintenance wizard, net watcher. resource
meter, scheduled tasks, system information, system monitor, system restore.
Then the scandisk shortcut came up missing and later the defrag shortcut.
That's when I dragged those two into the startup menu and as you say they
turned out not to be shortcuts. This is what I have done so far. In the
sartup menu I created a shortcut for scandisk. I then dragged the shortcut up
to accessories and into system tools. I restarted and it stayed there. I have
not tried it yet but is has an msdos icon. I don't do well extracting files.
My mind isn't as fresh as it once was. 78 here.
Thanks

Ok Kelly - I may have confused myself and given you some misleading
information earlier.

As far as I can now tell from your follow-up, it may not be the scandisk.exe
file that you need to be looking for - but rather - the scandskw.exe file.
Note the difference in spelling (no 'i' and a 'w' on the end).

Scandskw.exe should be located in your Windows folder - and you may only
need to create a replacement shortcut for your System Tools folder. And this
should give the 'proper' icon!!

If however scandskw.exe is missing from your Windows folder, again you can
extract a 'fresh copy' from the WIN_17.CAB folder. If you are not sure how
to extract files, see either :-

or

or if you come unstuck :-

Thanks Mart,
I had that file and created a shortcut to the tools folder and the icon was
right. I also did the same with defrag. I closed everything but systray and
exolorer and ran scandisk with no problems. Not so lucky with defrag. It only
goes to 3% and starts over and over and over and over.
Thanks

Either try running Defrag in Safe Mode - should be ok that way (the problem
is most likely caused by 'other things' running in the background, which
don't *usually* run in Safe Mode) and/or download and run ScanDefrag v 2.4a.

This is a FREE utility, written by several well respected contributors to
these News Groups and has been designed to run several original MS utilities
through a 'filter' which eliminates the usual junk which stops Defrag (and
Scandisk) from running properly in Normal Mode - as you are already
experiencing <g>

You can get ScanDefrag at either of the two sites below - and be sure to
read the associated notes for setting it up:
http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2/scandefrag/main.htm
http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html

HTH and good luck

Kelly - Good to hear that you've now got defrag working (in Normal Mode?) -
if you leave it long enough - and 'ok' the restart nag screens - it will
eventually complete. But the Scandefrag program can be a useful alternative
option when things are difficult.

I note that Mike M is looking after you with your tmp files issue and am
sure that his solution will sort you out. Thanks for your feedback - it's
appreciated.
