I have another thread going and needed to go to my windows folder. I noticed
I have 1715 .tmp files with 0 bytes. they mostly start with ff and are about
20 characters long. I don't have norton so it's not the flu. Of what use are
they?
Thanks
Kelly

It appears that you may have Microsoft's Machine Debug Manager (mdm.exe)
loading
at startup.  MDM is installed by default when you install MS Office and
perhaps
also by VisualStudio.  If you don't need MDM to debug script problems then
I
would recommend a) killing mdm.exe in the Task Manager, b) removing
mdm.exe from
Startup in MSConfig, c) in Internet Explorer, go Tools | Internet Options

Advanced and make certain that "Disable script debugging" is checked in
the
"Browsing" section, and d) renaming mdm.exe to something like mdm.old.
This can
be a pretty persistent little program and unless one renames the file you
will
find it added to startup again behind your back - for example when adding
a
service pack to O2K.

Once you have killed mdm you can delete all the fff??????{?????}.tmp files
it will have created in your ..\windows folder.

See also MS KB Q221438 - "OFF2000: Files Whose Name Begins with "fff"
Appear
in Windows Folder"

Mike, there were two copies of mde.exe in msconfig, startup. One was checked
and the other was not. Un-checked it and after the startup there was only one
and it was not checked. Removed those 0 byte files. Seems ok but they can
hang around in the recycle bin for a while.
Thanks

Kelly,

That you had an unchecked entry for mdm.exe sounds to me as if you have
had this problem before and at that time unchecked mdm.exe but did not
rename it as I suggested with the result that it got added back in as a
start-up item after the installation of some patch or other.

You can safely permanently delete the fff??????{?????}.tmp files as they
serve no purpose at all.

BTW my apologies about the formatting of my earlier reply.  I blame cut n
paste. <vbg>

Mike,
Thanks for the help. While I was in msconfig, startup, I noticed I had 2
copies of Resolution Assistant. One was checked and the other was not. Is
this a problem. Seems to be a Dell program. Sorry to keep picking your brain.
lol
Thanks

Whenever you see two entries in MSConfig one checked and one unchecked
that are otherwise identical this usually means that an application that
you manually removed from the start-up axis didn't agree with you and
decided to reinstate itself - often behind your back.  Well known examples
include Windows Messenger on some OS platforms and Apple QuickTime's
qttask.exe on virtually all platforms.  In your case the Resolution
Assistant has done this on your system.  How you deal with this is up to
you.  If you never use this application uninstall it alternatively you
could try unchecking it again and the renaming the application and editing
any shortcuts that point to the Resolution Assistant using the original
filename to point instead to the renamed file.
