Its  a Sony Vaio FX-101.  Came with 2 recovery cds and Me installed
allegedgly exactly what was on the discs.

Has anyone been able to reinstall to new drive??  According to online docs
the discs first perform a partition delete plus format the drive so I'm
thinking the full ME must be installed?

I've followed the online instructions resetting bios to default etc but it
wont play ball.  Am I missing something?

I think you'll find that if it came with recovery discs it will only
install on the original hardware and changing HD's is like trying to
install to a different machine and it is probably locked to that specific
make and model.
I could be wrong so wait to see if one of the experts comes along to help.
Joan
PS: As I had just done a clean up of old messages this was the only one I
saw so if it was a part of an ongoing thread I'm sorry.

Its Ok, its a new thread and so far your my only reply, so no need to
appologise.  I'm given to understand that Sony dont bios lock (well didnt on
the earlier versions)?

At the moment its test running XPpro. I suspect as xp immediately puts the
drivers on it may be a case of copying the original me discs and adding
certain drivers/files to them befor install.  Its not beyond my capabilities
but I'm off work at the mo recovering from surgery. So I have the time to
play but the old brain is not firing on all cylinders.  XP is looking like
the least troublesome at the moment, though I suspect it will be slightly
slower.

Hope you make a speedy recovery from your op.

I don't know anything about the model you mention and if it's a laptop
even less <g> but if you hang in there I'm sure someone will see your post
and be able to help.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help,
Joan

Spikey, not been there myself but recall plenty of NG inches specifying that
WinMe MUST be installed BEFORE XP (Pro or Home) on a clean install - unless
you use a third party boot handling utility. If you try the other way
around, WinMe will not be recognised and/or it will only boot into XP
without an option to access WinMe.

Maybe Mike M (if/when he's available) can amplify the situation further.

In the meantime, the MS KB might be a useful starting point for further
information.
Perhaps "Windows Millennium Edition Setup.txt File Contents"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271240/en-us
section "INSTALLING WINDOWS ME WITH WINDOWS NT"
*might* be a good place to start.
