Yay ! Now, does that apply to the following receivers too ?
RX-V2700, RX-N600D, HRT-N5060 ?

PS : Please can you provide the URL of the notification / news ?

MikeyB is right.

I just contacted Yamaha Canada, and they confirm that an upgrade exists.
They only got word themselves a few days ago, and there is no public
announcement yet as that they are still trying to figure out how to deploy
it.

I am brought my RX-N600 in today to have it upgraded while I wait, as they
are just a few miles from me. They dumped something into the units flash
memory, and I'm now busy ripping the CD collection. I'm imagining that it'll
work for all their 'network receivers'.

Can you let us know who you contacted at Yamaha Canada because I called them
on Thursday and spoke to the Service Department; they told me they had never
heard of this upgrade.  They also told me that they had no control over what
Microsoft did with their software.

Thanks.

The first guy I spoke to was John Ball. He confirmed the existence of the
upgrade and gave me the following contact:

Mathew Hubbard, Service Manager, 647-426-4226
135 Milner Ave., Toronto (Scarborough)

Mat actually did the (10 minutes of) work. They are still trying to decide
on the best way to deploy, and are considering  including making it
available via the web for people who have "flash drives" or some such (I
know *nothing* about those).

I'm in the US and the Yamaha rep in Cali said that the firmware is onl
for Canada. So far I am stuck with this receiver and cant access my p
songs. I have a question for you guys that got it working. In th
manual it says that you can browse by trees, but people are saying tha
it cant be done. That there is also a limit as to how many songs can b
browsed at the time. Is this true? I know it has the 8 listings at th
time for internet radio, is this the same for pc songs?
Thanks.

ps-any chance that you may have those firmware files handy

Browsing doesn't seem to have changed from when I had the receiver interface
with WMP10/WMC2. I ripped a couple of hundred of my CD's on to the laptop and
they all seem to be accessible although browsing them is not particularly
pleasant.

The following structure only works if you are interfacing with the YAMAHA
MCX-2000 music server.

  PLAYLISTS
  ARTISTS > ALBUM > SONGS
  ALBUMS > SONGS
  SONGS
  GENRES > ALBUM > SONGS

Otherwise you are stuck with:
  PLAYLISTS > SONGS
ARTISTS > SONGS BY THE ARTIST(every song associated with that artist)
ALBUMS > SONGS ON THE ALBUM
SONGS      (every song in the library - all 2500 of them)
GENRES > SONGS IN THE GENRE (every song in that genre)

And you have to scroll through the songs 8 per screen, it can take a very
long time to find the one you are looking for.

My receiver interfaces with a laptop so to make life easier I just lug
around the laptop and create a playlist on the fly for the songs I want to
play. I can then easily select the playlist from the receiver (because I
don't have very many of them). It is less than Ideal but it's the best I've
been able to come up with. If you have a desktop in one room and the receiver
in another room then it would be a royal pain to do it that way.

Sorry, the technician did the firmware upgrade at the depot so I don't have
the firmware files to pass along.

I don't think that's true. The manual uses a tree in an explanatory diagram.

Instead of a smooth scroll, you get pages of 8 titles each. It's really
klunky, it's but really cheap functionality too.

Thanks for the info. I still cant believe that the firmware can b
different for Japanese and Canadian products. Its the same machine, wh
would they go through all that trouble. I was in the Yamaha site an
people can download a software for programmers to edit their firmwares
I think its java based, not sure. Maybe someone can edit the whole GU
and make it better

Great idea, but they already have your money.

The GUI is terrible (remember "pong" in the 70's?) but for the difference
between an ordinary receiver and this functionality, I'm going to stick with
it.

If you could keep them distracted after the upgrade, I'll pop over and
clone that USB memory stick to a laptop, so we can post it on the web
for general consumption ;-)

I wonder why they won't release it on their website ?

They were discussing that as a deployment option. Don't know why they've
chosen not to do it that way for those who can handle it.
lollonais - 10 Jan 2007 17:09 GMT
The guys at the place had not even looked at it. I was the first on
with the issue. When I called Yamaha CA, the guy looked to see if i
could be something I could do. He said he did not see it and to take i
in to the service center. Oh well, sorry I could not get the firmwar
file. But someday, someday, mark my words!!!

I contacted Yamaha Tech Support on Jan 11th 2007, to inquire again on
the firmware update.  I had a couple of home theater guys coming out
the following day to fine tune the system the next day.  I wanted to
confirm two things first that there was a firmware upgrade and secondly
it would not reset any settings that had been done by the techs.  I
told Yamaha Support that if there was no firmware update I was planning
on returning the receiver and cancel the setup scheduled.  If there was
a firmware upgrade, but reset the system settings I would reschedule
the system setup date.

The support guy was a lot nicer and more sincere that when I had called
them on Jan 2nd.  He told me that the word he had gotten was that a
firmware was schedule for release in the US to be made available to the
public in approximately 10 days.  He did not know of any Yamaha Service
Center firmware update.  (I called the local professional service
center and they confirmed).  He could not tell me how it was going to
be made available or what the firmware upgrade process entailed.  He
said that would be highly unlikely that it would reset my existing
settings for surround sound and such.  We then had some small talk
about the streaming capabilities.  He explained that they would almost
have to install a computer with Linux on it in the receiver to get the
expected quality.  This made sense.  Then later, I thought, "Wait, my
cell phone and my kid's $80 Wal-mart in-dash receiver do a better job
than what the USB option does."  You can hook an i-pod into the USB
port of the in-dash receiver.

Since then; the tech guys have done their fine tuning.  Now, I will
wait until the 21st and call Yamaha Tech Support again on the firmware
upgrade.

Side note:
The two tech guys that check my home theater setup did only minor
changes.  I had them program all my remotes or at least try.  They got
stuck in the same places I did.  They took all my video routings that
were going through the receiver and hook them directly to the TV
(Samsung). The routing through the receiver was throwing off the lip
sync for satellite.    They turned up th rear speaker volume as their
personal preference.  They did not changed the speaker distance
settings.  The techs stated my room already match the speaker distance
defaults.  They reviewed my speaker sizes.   They replaced some of my
cabling with monster cable which I had on hand.   I am glad it was free
promotion, normally they charged $200.  They were still there for two
hours.

My wife bought me a Harmony Remote for my birthday.  The remote did not
recognize the receiver as an MP3 player.  It wanted an external device.
Harmony's tech support guys were confused when I told them that the
N600 was able to play music from a USB, PC, Internet.  Once I was able
to explain the receiver,  they configured the remote for me. I can now
use the Harmony remote to control the N600 features.  Thumbs up for the
tech support guys from Harmony.   They are patient and willing to help
you out.  Plus, you are not speaking from someone overseas with a
strong accent.

I have until Jan 29th to return the receiver.  I sure hope a firmware
update comes for as much time as I have invested in the Yamaha N600.

Where are you? They already have in So FL since the 5th. Good Luck,

I live in South Dakota.  I called Yamaha supprt 714-522-9015 on Jan
22nd 2007.    The rep, Mark, took down my name, reciever purchase date,
and e-mail address.  He said I would be e-mailed the firmware update
and instructions on how to apply the update within 24 hrs.

If things don't go as planned.  I will post an update.

call Yamaha in California and talk to Chuck. He is a real nice guy an
will help you. As far as I'm concerned all other Yamaha Techs and C
are a.ses. After he told me he would send me the upgrade, I got a
email from some other tech, that told me the opposite. Anyway,
returned mine. The only way I'll get another Yamaha, is with a hug
discount or free. I'm getting a Denon or H.K

You've met them all?
lollonais - 16 Feb 2007 14:11 GMT
Alright you got me. I was venting. I only know 3 out of the 5. The firs
one, was alright not that much help there, but then again he did no
have the update then. Then there was the asswipe that ruined it for me
he was a complete a.s. I wish I gotten his name so I can plastered i
all over the web. Then there was Chuck. If only he would have been th
one that answered the second time I would still have that receiver
Then there was Yamaha service center. Didn't know how to do it a
first, then after they told me that it would take up to 5 days, I ha
to call to find out that the receiver "had problems". I don't know i
this was true or maybe they did not know how to install the update
Anyway, overall bad experiences, bitter taste in my mouth. Can't trus
Yamaha products. I should've listened to the guy at Best Buy when h
said not go with them. He said that they are too broad of company t
specialize in any one thing. That I sould go with Denon or HK. So lik
I said, unless its a gift, I would not spend money in Yamahas
