I tried putting an M3U Playlist file in a shared directory and my mediaplayer
with play it.  It is Media that is stored on the web. so  for example the m3u
contains the line:
http://website.org/file.mp3

Is there a way to make this work?

Unfortunately not.  The songs that are included in a shared playlist must be
songs that are also shared out by WMC.  That is, each song must be in file
that's in a folder that is shared out with WMC.

Currently WMC will only stream content from the local hard-drive of the
computer where it is installed.  It doesn't proxy information from other
network shares or from the internet.
