So I'm looking at this WMC thing and it's pretty cool. But it won't install
on server 2003. Is there a version of it that does?
Sorry, no there isn't. This is an often requesed feature, but one that the
WMC team is unable to deliver. There was a decision made by the team that
owns the core of UPnP that UPnP Technologies be excluded from the server
versions of windows. Without the UPnP API's available on Server there is
no way for WMC to work there. As it was explained to me, UPnP is a
"consumer" technology and therefore somehow inappropriate in the
datacenter, wich is the only place that "server" belongs. (I know, don't
get me started)
We've asked and asked and asked the "Device Expeience Team" who owns the
core UPnP Technologies to reconsider and put UPnP on the Server SKU's even
if just for Longhorn's version of Server. So far, no joy.
If you happen to be a decision maker at a large company that buys lots of
copies of windows server, then I'd recommend that you escalate this issue
through your Technical Account Manager. I've done everything that I can do
on this front. The customer always speaks louder than some random
Microsoft Engineer.
Sorry,

Well gee, that's pretty worthless. The decision, that is, not your
explanation. Here I was gonna just mess with the MSI to make it install
right, but now we have to see about UPNP API on server. Blah! I'll have a
chat with our MS people but, while we're a pretty big customer, I'm pretty
much a nobody. Thanks for the reply though.

Why cant Microsoft leave the decision of what should be included on a server
to the actual customers who will use it? Have they ever heard of OPTIONS?
And the ability to turn features on and off?
I run a Server 2003 machine here at home for developing websites on, it
also contains all of my Media files (videos and music) because I have
mirrored disks in it and I prefer to keep my files secure (well at least more
secure than a single drive in my main PC running XP Pro).
Windows Media Connect will not let me add network folders from my XP PC, so
what am I to do? Has Microsoft deemed that anyone who falls into the "power
user" category cannot share their files if they are on a server?
This is rediculous. Either patch Server 2003 to re-enable UPnP functions
and enable WMC, or update WMC to allow the sharing of Network drives.
In fact, I am a beta test of Windows Server 2003 R2, so I am going to put in
a suggestion right now!

Ok Done, Bug Report Number 275415009 on beta.microsoft.com.
It will probably be turned down though knowing Microsoft as I do.
