DSM-320 truncates DRM files?

Hi all,

I have a DSM-320 and have used it successfully with with WMC for a few weeks
to stream ripped CDs. I then bought some tracks from MSN. The tracks I have
bought have downloaded to my library OK, and they play just fine on Media
Player, but the DSM truncates the track times, e.g. the DSM reports the time
as 2:03 for a song that is actually 3:47 long. The song plays for 2:03 then
stops and moves on to the next song on the album, which is also truncated in
a similar way. Any ideas why?

Have you updated to 1.06?

I upgraded and it didn't play any protected songs.  Then I went to a
conference for a week.  When I came back it now plays protected songs,
but truncates the song.

Has anyone found a fix for the truncation of protected MSN songs?  I
sent it to D-Link, but have not heard a peep.

Everyone -

I have just installed the DSM-320 and have the latest version of firmware.
I spoke to technical help at Dlink and they were not helpful or even aware of
this general issue and have escalated me to Tier 3 support.  I can not
contact them till next week during business hours.  If I find anything out I
will post and let them know these posts are out there.

Currently WCM says that my device can not play protected files which are the
MSN download songs and other download songs.  However it does play them but
truncated like you all have seen.

Finally one tech said that the DSM-320 can not play a recording over 192k.
Even though the songs we have downloaded from MSN are only around 150k they
are formated in variable bit rate and Dlink tech said that being variable bit
rate could spike over 192k and cause the problem playing back.  I don't know
if that is true or not but I can not seem to get it to work either.

Thanks,
Don

I love how they try to blame others if they even admit the problem.
When I talked to support with 1.05 they refused to admit that advancing
to the next song with MSN songs was a problem.  But somehow version 1.06
fixes that problem.  Although the fix may have been to shorten the song
by truncating the last 1/3.

I don't see how they can get the PlayForSure logo with all these problems.

I got the following BS reply when asking D-Link about a fix for the
truncation problem with 1.06.  Nothing about it being a known issue, no
work around.  Just nothing.

Date of Reply: 9/6/2005
Products: DSM-320
Operating System: Windows XP Home

We have no information on when or if additional firmware will be
released for this product.

Should you require further assistance with your D-Link products, please
reply to this message, or call toll free at 877-453-5465.  Thank you for
networking with D-Link.

Sincerely,

A couple more emails have been exchanged on the subject.

In reply to the email below:

Me:  Does this mean that there are no plans to fix the truncation of DRM
files that happens to me (and others according to the complaints on the
newsgroups) since upgrading to 1.06?

D-Link Support (or lack thereof): No, this means that we (in technical
support) have no information on when or if additional firmware will be
released for this product.

Until we are informed by the product managers, (the people that make new
firmware, etc.), we can''t give an answer to this issue.

Me:  Is this a known issue?  Several people on the newsgroups have
reported the same thing.

D-Link Lack of Support:  Not to my knowledge, but since I do not work
with the programming unit, that does not mean that they are not aware of
this issue.

So it seems that they do not know and are not willing to spend an iota
of time trying to find out.
