Is there any way to get Windows Media Connect 2 to work with Server 2003 or
will there be a version for it?  I store all my music (13+ Gb) and pictures
(4+ Gb) on a Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition system.  I'd like to
be able to stream music and view slideshows on my Xbox 360.  I've found no
way of getting Media Connect to work on the machine.

I was able to install it using the instructions for installing on WinXP x64.
The problem is folder sharing isn't started, and won't start because there
is no "upnphost" service.  Is there any way to "rip" the UPnP service out of
Windows XP and add it to the server or will this be something available in a
future service pack or Longhorn Server?

The lack of support for UPnP on Windows 2003 server is the only reason that
WMC doesn't work there.  It isn't a problem with WMC, but rather with the
lack of UPnP Support.  I'm hopeful that the server version of Vista will
include support for UPnP, but of corse I can't promise anything.  There
isn't any way (well, no way that is supported or wouldn't violate the
License Agreement) to put UPnP on 'Windows 2003 Server.

Sorry,

Hello Alan,

Is there any not supported way to do that ?

I had to install Windows 2003 Server (in fact a 2000 Server would have
worked too) because of my needs of installing Apple services.

I have bought an audio gateway which works well with MM Jukebox, but it is
not very stable in v10. I would have liked to install Media Connect.
I have tried to change the compatibility mode (in Windows XP) but alas, the
setup ask for SP2 !!!

Please help !

There is no support for UPnP on Windows Server 2003.  Because of that WMC
will not work there.

Hello Alan,

Well, that is what I understood, but I thought there could be a solution...
Even a very little one...  :'-|

Thanks

Alan,

What is the difference between Windows Media Connect and Windows Media
Server included in the Win2003 package ?

My SBS is on 24/7 and all my media is on my NAS but to stream it to my
x-box I have to start another computer? What a ludicrous situation.

Well, I have installed TwonkyMusic and it works well !

This is the best UPnP server I have found (maybe not better that
MediaConnect, but MediaConnect does not work on my Server 2003 so I do not
know) and it works with samplers in a different way than "common" albums, so
there is not a lot of artists with just 1 title in the list...

TwonkyMusic is about US$14 for 1 year of updates and US$19 for life time of
updates.
It is not free, but the quoted characters are well displayed on my Noxon (it
was not the case with MusicMatch Jukebox) and sometimes MMJ used to hang.
Twonky is quite smaller (like a real service should) and you can manipulate
the rendering to the audio gateway.

So you can use MMJ v10 too, it is free but quite bigger and not very good as
a service.

I hope this will help.
