Windows XP sp2. No sound through Windows Media Player

I am running WinXP sp2 on an Acer laptop. When I open
files in Windows Media Player I get video output but no
audio.
I have tried clearing out Temporary Internet folder,
updating audio codecs etc, but still no joy.
Help!!! ...please.
