I've been trying to play a P2P shared video file in Media Player 10 and have
been getting  error message ID number C00D109B.

The text says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs
required to play the file could not be found..."

I'm using XP with Service Pack 1. The file is an avi. type. Can anybody
suggest a solution for finding the missing codecs?

I've downloaded ffdshow and that didn't fix the problem. GSpot Codec Tool
states that the fourcc code for the avi. file is mp43 but that codec is
already installed on my pc. Any other suggestions?

Then you need to talk to whoever wrote that codec.  There is no valid codec,
to encode that video in an AVI container the encoder used a pirated/hacked
codec from MS.
