I've upgraded to Windows Media Player 10 and XP SP2 ... I'm now having
problems playing any AVI files that use Indeo codecs (which I was previously
able to view under Media Player 9 and SP1). The audio will play, but I get
visualizations for the video.
I've checked the windows/system32/ directory for the codec dlls, and the
codecs are there, Indeo v. 3.2, 4.1 and 5.11 ... when I use a different
media player, like the Divx player, or VLC, the video plays just fine. I've
used gspot 2.21 to check to make sure the files turn up as valid and
renderable, which they do.
I've tried installing the indeo 5.11 codecs again, I've installed divx and
xvid again (not that should change anything, but it couldn't hurt) as well as
reinstalling windows media player 10. Still having the same problems, but
only with Indeo codeced files.
Additionally, I forgot to add ...
When viewing the contents of the folder in "Thumbnail" mode, the preview of
the AVI file comes up just fine, as well.
The codec is in the system, all the other video applications can use it, and
even the Operating System (XP) can use it ... why not Windows Media Player 10?
After a *lot* of researching, I've got the answer ...
The file is located in a shared directory on the computer I use as my
file/print server. When attempting to play a media file that is compressed
with the Indeo codec (any version), if the file is located on a remote
computer via a shared directory, you get a codec error. If you copy that
exact same file over to your local machine and attempt to play it, it plays
just fine.
In short ... somehow, SP2 has messed up playback of Indeo codec files over a
fileshare with WMP. As long as the file is local, there's no problem. If
it's over a fileshare, you get a missing codec error.
Downgrading from WMP 10 to WMP 9 does not work ... WMP 9 simply gives you an
unknown error, instead of a codec error.
All other video playback software (realone, quicktime, divx player) plays
the Indeo compressed files without problem over the network shares and
locally.

How do you go about submitting a bug report about this sort of problem? I've
been all over the MS WMP sites, but can find no links for providing software
feedback.

You need to call PSS. That has already been noted by Ligos.

This issue is noted. You will either need to play back the content from a
local source or to reencode the videos to use a different video codec.

See http://www.zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
Following up to your post with the resolution is good netiquette.

I had this exact problem - thank you so much for your discovery. i took
many of the same steps you took before concluding I was stuck, and doubt I
would have realized the shared-drive was the culprit. Thanks again,
Chris
