How to manually enter album/track data easily?

Lawrence - 30 Dec 2004 02:34 GMT I'm trying to use WMP's CD ripping capability with some lectures-on-CD and I'm having a fit trying to get my "album" and tracks labeled.
After inserting the disk and going to the Rip tab, it shows the CD as having unknown title, unknown artist and no track names.
This isn't a problem, I understand how the disc contains none of that information. I'm happy to enter the requisite data, but WMP makes it very hard.
First of all, I see how I can manually edit the track information directly on the screen, but how do I give the "album" a title and artist name? I can't see any way to enter this information directly. Also, I'd like to use the same artist for all the individual tracks (in addition to an overall artist name on the album), but WMP makes me enter the name once for each track.
Of course I've tried the "Find Album Info" method, but this can be even more bizarre.
The "Find Album Info" is actually helpful as I use "Type information for a personally created CD..." to get a set of fields I can fill in, such as Album title and Artist name for the album in addition to the track names. Plus, when I enter an artist for an individual track, it nicely copies the same artist to all tracks. (Of course, why it won't let you move on without giving at least one track a name is a complete mystery to me...and inconvenient.)
However, when I try to "Finish" with these fields filled in, the player often seems to thrash while updating the Media Library. It seems to be looking for this "Album" on the internet (metaservices.windowsmedia.com ???), despite the fact that I just told it I'm typing in names for a personally created CD. While sometimes the method works, correctly renaming the fields of my ripped files as I indicated, frequently it comes back with a message "The service is not available at this time, click CLOSE and try again later." Then it loses all the information I entered. Ugh.
I don't have to tell any of you how ridiculous this is. While super-duper internet lookups for album information are clearly very useful, why is it so difficult to do the simplest of tasks, like entering track and album data manually? OK, editorial over.
Can someone help me here? How do I name these albums and artists without all these hassles?

Fill in the Album-title and Album-Artist fields. If you do it in the rip pane, it updates all tracks (same goes for genre), but not elsewhere.

OK, editorial over. No idea. But given the downward trend with v10, I don't think anyone's looking at this issue closely (on the team that is).

Lawrence - 31 Dec 2004 02:26 GMT Thanks for your response. However, I'm still confused. I must be missing something.
You suggested that I "Fill in the Album-title and Album-Artist fields. If you do it in the rip pane, it updates all tracks (same goes for genre), but not elsewhere."
When I am in the rip pane the album title and album artist are displayed above the spreadsheet-like list of tracks, but those two pieces of information are displayed as editable fields. So how can I enter that information? The only way I have found to get editable fields for the album title and artist is to click first on the "Find album info" and to select.
And if I do click on the "Find album info" button and enter my own information, upon trying to "Finish" and update the library I get the "Service unavailable" error and WMP deletes all that information I entered.
So how do I reliably enter this information? Sorry to repeat myself, but I'm not sure I understood the suggested solution.
And, implied in this question is also the question "is there a better WMA ripper than WMP?"
Thanks for your help.

Double-click on a track to get into Edit mode, or right-click on a track and select Edit or Advanced Tag Editor.
Brandy - 27 Jan 2006 21:26 GMT Mike:
All of the information you've given suggests that there is NO way to manually override the Artist/Album information unless you do it from the RIP screen, either before or after they are rip'd. It seems ludicrous that if you can manually enter the track information on a CD that you just put in the computer to listen to, (and don't plan to rip), and WMP can recognize and pull up that information on subsequent insertions of the CD, you should be able to manually enter the Album title and Artist the same way.
I make MANY versions of my own demo-CD's, or demo-CD's of other musician-friends, and I should be able to use the WMP library to keep and store this information like other products do, (WinAmp, iTunes, to name a couple). Why is this so difficult?

My post is being read out of context. In the RIP pane the cited fields only have to be filled in for one track and are updated across all the album tracks. In the LIBRARY pane this does not apply.
Brandy - 31 Jan 2006 23:08 GMT That was my point... It doesn't work in the LIBRARY pane, and it makes no sense to me that you can edit track-names in the LIBRARY pane, but not Album/Artist information. I'm not trying to be confrontational, but as I mentioned before, WinAmp, iTunes, Roxio/AudioCentral, and all of the other major juke-box type applications allow that information to be modified simply by clicking on the field. Why does WMP not allow it?
Thanks,

Why does WMP not allow it? My point is that WMP usually does. You may be trying to do something differently, like switching my bottom-post to top-post to make this conversation harder to read.

Lawrence - 31 Dec 2004 05:53 GMT I hadn't realized that the the fields on the top half of the "Rip" window were user-controlled.
I can just add "Album Artist" and "Album Name" to the list and edit them as I would edit any other field.
My screen was pre-set not to include those fields and I didn't realize I could change that.
Again, thanks for your help.
