WMP version 10
Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2
WMP cannot play, synchronize or burn a protected file because an error
occurred while verifying the licence.
Downloaded from Wanadoo Music Club UK, woolworths and virgin
Some other wmv / wma files do the same from different sources

I have tried changes to the reg file as Ron has suggested but it still does
not work.

Any ideas ?

After upgrading to SP2, I was not able to play music I had already
downloaded, nor was I able to download any new music.  The media player 10
could not get past the liscense issues.  After going thru 4 levels of
microsoft tech support, no one could answer WHY.  I went to MSN music
customer service, and now the problem is resolved.  SP2 has so much security
built into it, that it corrupts your drm folder when installed.  This folder
if full hidden liscense files and your music will not play without them.  To
fix, this is what MSN music online tech support had me do.
First delete the MSN music assistant from add/remove programs in the control
panel.  Then you want to go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\drm,
rename this file drm_old.  Then you want to go to MSN music to download and
install the new MSN music assistant.  This will creat a new drm folder.
After going thru these steps, my media player works perfectly.  If you need
assistance, the most knowledgable help is available in an online chat thru
MSN music.  Good luck!

Hi

I have tried to subscribe to the msn uk music web site and tried to download
the music manager plug in as it seems to be the only place to do it but it
fails with an invalid signature on the active x download. its getting very
frustrating as i have no responses from the od2 download support email
addresses. i have even tried to rollback to wmp9 but even that version
complains about the licences as well!

is there anywhere else that i can download the active x from ?

I found MSN music assistant by going thru the Media Player 10.  Go to the MSN
music store from media player, then to customer service.  There is a link on
the right side of the page that says "I can't install the music assistant".
That will take you to a page that says "Install Again".  That will take you
to the download.  I'm sure there is an easier way to get there, but I didn't
find it either.  The website is music.msn.com.  Good luck

Imcakelady, do you use msn for downloading music?,I use napster and I was
told the music assistant is only needed when using msn.I say this because I
followed your directions to fix this problem and msn wants me to set up an
account with a credit card, so thats why its a little confusing.....Henry
