This happens to me everytime I try to open an audio/video file on the MMS
protocol.
It says it can't do it because it doesn't have the protocol BUT if I go in
the Network Tab in Windows Media Player Options all the protocol listed are
checked and available and MMS is there (with no proxy set, and I use no
proxy). So I really don't know what's wrong!

The URL I'm trying to open is
mms://media.tin.it/servizi/la7/markette/best_markette/12_rmv_xena.wmv
i'm using Windows Media Player 10 over Windows XP SP2
AND the URL there CAN be opened if I use "mplayer2.exe" but not using
regular Windows Media Player.

I know that newsgroup forums do not owe anyone a response. Daniel you have
good company with this problem. I am having the exact same issue. Sites
like cnn.com or ussocer.com that have large video libraries that rely
exclusively on mms playlist links.
I would like to add that I have 3 pc's at my home that access the internet
via cable broadband via a netgear router. My XP laptop and Win2K wireless
machines are having this issue. What is weird is that my 3rd pc, an XP
desktop, that is connected via ethernet cable can access mms video links
without a problem. I have compared all my WMP settings on each box and can't
figure what is going on.
