I installed a new (faster) hard drive in my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. BTW,
this exact problem existed on the previous hard drive, same software.
Windows XP Pro, SP2, Dell OEM CD-ROM. Windows Media Player 9 installs by
default. CNN.com and XMRadio.com streaming video and radio, respectively,
work fine under Windows Media Player 9.
I immediately upgraded to Windows Media Player 10 (Don't ask why, just want
latest version of everything...yes, I'm in a support group). CNN.com and
XMRadio.com streaming video and radio, respectively, STOP working under
Windows Media Player 10.
I spent hours on the phone with MS to no avail. Oddly (or not), Windows
Media Player 10 could not be made to uninstall so I could put Media Player 9
back on. MS themselves tried, at various levels of support expertise.
Just goofing around during one of their long "May I put you on hold to speak
to another colleague" moments, I logged into the Guest account on my system.
Whatdoyouknow, CNN and XM Radio both worked. Windows Media Player 10 is not
hosed, at least not in a Guest account.
MS support person gets back on the phone, I tell them what I've done, and
they conclude my User Account is corrupted and I need to delete that account,
move all docs to another account, and be happy with my solve of their problem.
Again, this EXACT problem existed on the previous hard drive, same software
etc.
My question is: Has anyone heard of such a thing affecting Windows Media
Player 10? Is there any way to "uncorrupt" the user account? Changing User
Accounts will not be a simple task as my system is remotely logging into a
corporate domain, Exchange, VPN etc.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Gurn.

I was given excellent advice on how to delete the user account here. It
fixed my problem of WMP continually using 100% CPU/freezing. Others
have said the same as you on this thread, that windows media player
worked fine when they used another persons account.
I give credit to Phrozengolem for this.

I ran accross a post that mentioned that this guy did not have the
problem
when I logged in under his wifes profile. This got me thinking since I
was
having the same prob. as all of you guys and tried all the fixed, but
with no
success. Here is what I told him and what worked for me.
I think you have stumbled onto a solution. I have been having all the
same
problems as everyone else. I have tried all the "monitor folders"
(though
not a bad idea to turn off) things and everything else I could think of
in
terms of troublshooting. It seems like this is a profile issue. I am
glad
that you thought to try it under your wifes. I do not have multiple
users on
mine, so I would not have thought of this. What I did was went into my
profile settings and deleted everything under a media player folder.
There
are a few of these folders. One under
C:\Documents and Settings\"your Profile"\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Media Player
C:\Documents and Settings\"your Profile"\Application
Data\Microsoft\Media
Player
Delete the files in these folders. I then deleted all the files under
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
and let windows recreate them (it will do so automatically). I closed
everything and reopened WMP10. Works just fine now.
Hope this helps!

That part about deleting the c:\program files\windows media player folder
should be completely extraneous. The rest might be helpful, though. =)
