windows media player problem

when i try to copy cd's into the media player it says "windows media player
has encountered an unknown error." does anyone know what this might be?

Maybe. Do you have any other CD recording or playback software ?
Do you know which it is ? EG Roxio, Nero, and many other types.

It's possible this is interfering with the playback in media player,
by intercepting the drive commands or digital data coming from the
player. [The technical google terms is "layered service provider" or
LSP].

Sony did this recently with their "rootkit", which made it possible
for them to tamper with your fair use rights to playback and convert
digital audio from your CDs. Other providers do similar things.
