On windows Media Player 10, every time I tried to play a video file (or dvd)
I could hear the sound but not see anything. After I updated some things on
windows it started to work then stopped again a few days later. Afterwards I
installed some codecs. Once again, I could suddenly see as well as hear the
videos but I opened Windows Movie Maker and it stopped working. I've tried
heaps of codecs and the videos always seem to work when I use quicktime but I
can't work out what triggers this problem.

Don't install "some codecs". Install only those you think you need from
reputable sources.

There are many video formats, and WMP10 will play some without 3rd
party codecs, Quicktime will play others. You need to slow down,
uninstall any codecs or codec-packs you have already installed, reset
the file assosiations of WMP and QT to their defaults and start again.
Then when you cannot play a video file, go and find a proper codec for
it that is compatible with WMP, from a trustworthy source. Check with
Microsoft site which ones are known to be compatible.

You sound like you've just thrown a load of random programs into your
system and hoped for the best.
