I have just downloaded WMP11 and attempted to view a video file with .avi
extension. When the video launches, the image is upside down and backwards,
the audio is fine. What could be the reason for this? Any and all help is
sincerely appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure. What codec does the GSpot program say the AVI file uses ?

Hey Neil,
Thanks so much for your help. I downloaded the GSpot program and discovered
that the file uses the Div 3 Codec, Name: DivX 3 Low-motion.
Status: Codec(s) are installed.

Under "Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests" I clicked on "1" under "Vid".
A message said click on "2" for help. This resulted in a message that says:
"Failed to connect Output pin 0x009a717c ("Src Media") on *.avi to input pin
0x009aa0e4 ("stream") on filter 0x01fc2b1c ("DivX Demux").ConnectDirect()
failed. Error: 0x80040207: (unknown)

All of which is meaningless to me. If you can interpret the above I would be
very grateful. Thanks again!!

So, no that's fine and pretty common. Just install the DivX 6 decoder
and you should be running with backward compatibility to DivX 3 I
think : http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/

Dang! I downloaded and installed the DivX 6 Codec, it was bundled with DivX
Player and DivX Encoder (a trial version). anywa, I was able to open the file
properly using the DivX Player and the Core Media Player. But the video is
still upside down when I use Windows Media Player or Winamp.

Should I uninstall WMP completely and then reinstall WMP 11?

Thanks again for your help!

Ah, you didn't say. ZachD's site has instructions on reducing the
video card acceleration settings http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#vdriver

If that helps, it would be worth going to the website of your video
card manufacturer, and getting the absolute newest drivers, where this
problem may have already been resolved.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I followed these instructions:

Open WMP's Tools:Options:Performance:Advanced menu dialog. First try turning
off overlays, and then if that does not help, turn off the Video Mixing
Renderer.

That did the trick. Thanks again.
