Using Windows Media Player version 11 is it possible to transfer
albums/tracks from vinyl and cassette tapes to my PC hard drive? If so how is
it done?

If you have the Nero CD burning software, then that will probably
include the Nero Wave Editor, which can do what you want (provided you
can connect the record/cassette player).

Otherwise, I gladly support the advice of Neil Smith [MVP Digital
Media] and Candy, namely the free program Audacity
(<http://audacity.sourceforge.net>).

This page has instructions and videos on the steps needed :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/howto/FromVinyltoC
omputer_StepByStep.aspx

It mentions Plus! analog recorder (which was never really very good)
and which has been removed for download or purchase.

Instead I'd recommend using Audacity to record from Line-In directly
to MP3, or to WAV if you first want to run some of the pop/wow/flutter
filters and generally clean up and fade-in/fade-out the recorded
tracks. You can get that free from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

> Thanks Neil - Frank Slootweg named you as his source for the Audacity programme which has proved successful. I am now listening to tracks unheard for 30 years.... sad isn't it???

30 years isn't sad.
I'm listening to the rock and roll from the early to mid fifties.
I've still got more stuff to rip too.
