On WMP, go to the small dropdown menu below Now Playing, and choose
More Options then File Types from the popup. Is mpg selected as one of
the file types WMP is set to handle ?

Frequently, quicktime or real player (and other applications) will try
to grab that file association.

MPEG files come on 3 types which are hard to tell apart from the
filename - MPEG2 (also VOB), MPEG1 (also DAT) and MPEG4 (also .mp4 or
.m4v or .m4a, or .3gp or...)

If you mean the movie files are on a DVD disk, run Decheck to see if
you have a compatible DVD decoder installed for playback :

Is it just MPEG files you're having a problem with?  All other file types
work?

When you click the Web Help button, what URL does it take you to?

Can mplayer2.exe still play MPEG files?

That's "Unsupported stream/format".  That implies that the system's MPEG
handling has been stamped upon.

Under WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu tool, what
MPEG/DVD filters are listed?

If you go to the player's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu
tool, what
MPEG/DVD filters are listed?

To get to that menu, you can press ALT+H and then click that Help menu and
so forth. =)

OK, that's a ton of third party MPEG filters.  Why are they all there?  Did
you install a random codec pack or something?

You may be able to use the Windows XP MPEG Decoder Check-up Utility to set
this right again.  I would personally distrust the MainConcept and AC3Filter
files below for starters.
