HI Neil
Thanks for your answers! The volume is definitely on as it plays
other files. What I did try is playing the movie in Real Player - and
the sound works. So then it's something to do with WMP.....?? I
downloaded the codec above and it didn't work either. I am getting
into more advanced territory than I understand I think!

No, that check above would really only work for DVD movies and some
very limited other movie samples. Do you remember where you got the
file - or even, is it on a website I could check the file content ?
There's quite a lot of variables about movies which makes it hard to
diagnose without being able to see the result on your PC.
In media player, if you were to press CTRL+ M keys to show the menus,
start the file playing then go to File -> Properties menu, what is
listed there for audio (and video) codecs ?

I also had no sound on my DVD player after deleting PowerDVD. The AC3Filter
fixed the problem. Thanks for the advice.
