There's a place in WMP 11 that lets you specify that WMP should download
codecs automatically. So I'm told. But I can't find it. Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Start WMP11 > Tools > Options > Player tab > Automatic Updates - select
option.

Note that will only download a limited subset of codecs created by MS
- so for example it won't offer the pretty common DivX or H264 codecs

That's most likely from a licensing and support viewpoint rather than
any malicious intent - if MS offered a specific 3rd party codec, it
could be seen as anti-competitive and require them to offer support
for that codec too.

WMP has a plugin architecture which allows use of DirectShow or media
foundation based codecs, most commonly you'd search the web for
"(codec name) + Directshow" to get one which works in WMP.
