Titles staying in library when theyshouldn't

I've moved all my music files in to a new folder that is NOT in the "monitor
folders" list in WMP11.  I've then been reripping the CDs to WMA lossless in
the original Music folder.

The computer has been turned on/off several times since, and I've done a
rescan of the monitored folders.

However, the old titles/files are still showing up in the library, with the
incorrect path.  Sometimes they won't play, but sometimes Windows finds them
in their new folder.  In any event, they shouldn't be listed any more.  Now
I'm getting double listings, the new ripped files plus the old moved ones.

What to do?

Further to this, I'm using Vista Home Premium;  I want to keep the compressed
files as inventory for my portable devices, so deleting them isn't an option.

I've always been impressed by how WMP manages instantly to follow files
that get renamed/moved. I suspect it gets realtime notification of such
events, much the way that explorer does.

If you want WMP to lose track (no pun intended) of files, you should
move/rename them whilst is is not running. You could probably make a
case that files which moved beyond the folders which it monitors should
get deleted from the library, but I imagine that would bring howls of
protest from people who take advantage of this feature.

I'm reasonably sure that you'll have to delete the library entries
manually, but if you attempt to play such an "orphaned" file, you get
prompted if you'd like the entry deleted (in WMP11, at least).

Hmm.  This does appear to contradict what is in the WMP help files, which
says that the target folders are monitored and tracks deleted from the
library when they aren't there.

If I put the files in a different place with WMP turned off, will that mean
the existing listings will go away?

And one more thing, I do note that sometimes WMP does NOT in fact find the
new location -- but the old file and location are still listed in the
library, even though the file is no longer there (it shows the old location
string, but can't play the file).

I wonder if closing down WMP works, there is also a services WMPNetworkSvc
running (media sharing in Vista).

If you have done the tagging right, you might consider deleting everything
from the library. There is an option to remove library contents without
removing the files. Then set the monitor directories right and do a rescan.

Maybe the sync options is of use. It allows you to transcode on the fly from
WMA lossless to MP3

And...Ron,Before you start to delete or Remove files from the library, I can
recommend that you protect your music maps with tagging "Read Only", so you
won't have to update your files again,it happened to me when I was in Library
and and clicked "Music info update"( I'm not sure how it's called in English)
,PLayer changed a lot of info in my Maps and files (I've got XP)

In the library tab there is an option to avoid overwriting existing tag
information.
There are also options to enable/disable renaming of files and moving files

I took a backup of an MP3 file then erased it whilst WMP11 was active.
It didn't notice. When I tried to play it, it added a little "i" icon to
the left of the track, and that offered me the choice of removing the
entry from WMP11 (saying that the file was missing)

No, in my experience they don't go away until you try to play them

Yes, I suspect that whatever mechanism notifies WMP11 of files being
renamed or moved is not 100% accurate, so you can easily get library
records that point at files that don't exist.

"Moving" maintains the file on the disk and merely puts it in another
location to you.  The file is tracked until deleted since it's the same
file.
