I recently found a fix for the problem of no sound when Media Player
is embedded in a html page.

Change this key from 1 to 0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\NodeCLSIDs
\{95037DA1-6ED9-4B27-8CFF-9AD3DFB0B2F2}]

My question is, what does this change do?

I left out that it's the AutoInsert key that gets changed.

That should be the SRSWow Sound effect, isn't it?  Do you have some other
audio processing object that might be interfering with it... ?
