iTunes broke my WMP?

I've got Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, all current patches up to but
not including the recently released SP1 update.  Windows Media Player is
v11.0.6000.6344.  I have an iPod Nano and iTunes recently prompted to
automatically update itself, and, stupid me, I allowed it to do so, and
now iTunes is at v7.6.2.9.

I typically do all my music playback on the computer with WMP, and only
use iTunes to load music onto my iPod.

Since iTunes updated itself, my WMP is now broken when it comes to
playing any of the MP3 files in my media library.  I've confirmed that
nothing untoward has happened to the files themselves, and iTunes quite
happily plays the MP3 files w/o any problems.

I get the following message box any time that I try to play a MP3 file
in WMP:

Title:

"Windows Media Player"

Text:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file.  The Player might not
support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to
compress the file."

Buttons:

"Close" and "Web Help"

It would appear that the iTunes update has mucked around with the codecs
associated with MP3 files and now WMP is failing as a result of that.  I
don't see anything in Microsoft's online tech support kb articles
regarding this issue and I wanted to find out if anybody else has run
into this problem and found a fix for it.

TIA,

Chuck

Nope...downloaded the same iTune update and it didn't affect my
WMP10 a bit. WMP11 in my estimation is like a colicky baby and
it doesn't take much to upset it. With Vista you have no
choice...perhaps the MVPs can help you.

While I would not go as far as saying iTunes could not possibly affect
WMP11, it is certainly the case that iTunes will not affect the codecs WMP11
uses. WMP11 uses 'DirectShow' filters (aka. codecs) which are totally
different to the 'QuickTime Components' used by iTunes.

A more typical problem that iTunes might cause is that it might take over
ownership of specific file types so that if you double-clicked on one of
them then iTunes would be used in preference to WMP11. Doing an update of
iTunes might well cause such a change. However this does not sound at all
related to your own problem.

For what it's worth I always make a system restore point before updating
iTunes OR Windows.

I'm reviewing the Microsoft Update history to see if it automatically
installed anything related to WMP11 or its codecs.  Perhaps something
bad crept into the automatic update process.  I had a serious problem on
another Vista system back in March where Microsoft Update pushed out a
damaged update that effectively killed the local Microsoft Update client
and thus prevented the system from getting further updates w/o going
thru an arduous manual process to restore the functionality.  If I
hadn't gotten that bad update before the recalled it, then the problem
never would have occurred.

Whatever has gone wrong with WMP11's codecs is pretty funky.  It may be
that perhaps not the specific file types, but the underlying document
classes are damaged, in terms of the Explorer shell's various extension
handlers that are registered for each document type.  If I right-click
on a .mp3 file in Explorer and choose "Properties", on the details tab,
there is *nothing* displayed regarding the codec used for the file and
nothing displayed about media information.  It would appear that
whatever broke WMP11 also impaired the shell's ability to gather the
same type of information.

you could try a mp3 tag editor program. i once found one that could strip
all the tag info from mp3s. test it on a few mp3s first obviously :)

have you tried playing a newly downloaded mp3, (not via pootunes)? or
ripping a cd with wmp and playing the resulting mp3s?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3\ShellEx
?

What URL does Web Help from that dialog take you to?
