Unlike for dvds, there is no official protection for CDs. Some have
made them difficult to copy on computers using various technical
tricks. Unfortunately some of these tricks even have made a few CDs
unplayable on even some stand alone CD players, mainly older ones. It
is likely that there is some CD recording software availabe that would
allow you to play and record your CDs on a computer. I have heard that
one of the DVD decrypt programs also will handle many problem CDs, but
such programs are illegal to sell in many places.
There is another possible problem. The CD player circuits on either a
computer or stand alone CD player can be so far out of adjustment that
they have problems reading some CDs that can be read on other players.
Some of the cheaper CD drives and associated circuits do not read
slighty faulty data nearly as well as some of the better ones. Problem
CDs tend to come in batches from a given plant that makes CDs, so it
is not uncommon to find that a replacement CD will not play properly
also, and CDs from other artists from the problem plant may have
problems also until the problem is noticed and corrected in future
batches of CDs.
