The crash occurs regardless of the presence of the wmpinfo.xml file. It will
happen with a freshly formatted frash drive.
The Security component upgrade site actually crashes IE and has the button
greyed out in Firefox.
There is no DRM store that I can find. There are no folders called DRM and
the registry does not have an //HKLM/Software/Microsoft/DRM
Are there any suggestions on where to go from here?

Did you have chance to turn on the option to "Show hidden files and
folders" in windows XP ? It's installed by default when WMP installs,
so it's kinda hard to see how it vanished.
ZachD might have some other ideas. His site has steps to run the
Individualisation http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#indiv and some info on
how to find out the current version you have installed.
Cheers - Neil

That link should definitely fix you up, but I would really love to know more
information about the system in that I've got The Right Person in DRM
interested in this but we haven't been able to find a way to reproduce this
problem yet.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Media Player. It didn't fix the problem
but I was able to find the registry entry and thus the DRM folder and delete
the files in it. (Should the uninstall have deleted these?)
I went to the security component upgrade site and it worked. I rebooted,
restarted Media Player and inserted a flash drive and it worked. Yeah!
Maybe I just missed the directory before? It appears in the correct place
now and shows up in a search now. I was showing hidden and system files when
I first searched so that's not the problem.
You asked about the hardware history:
Eight months ago there was smoke and the original motherboard failed and was
replaced with a different model. The CPU was kept and the hard drive was
upgraded at the same time.
Windows XP had to be repaired to work then updated. Media Player wouldn't
work at all. It had to be reinstalled to work with the new hardware. After
this point Media Player crashed with any flash drive. It wasn't critical so
it wasn't immediately dealt with. If you hadn't asked about the CPU upgrade,
I wouldn't have thought about it.
Thanks (Neil and Zach) for all of your suggestions. They helped solve the
problem even if I'm a little unsure of the cause of it.

P.S. - I suppose it's good to have the "right" person in digital rights
management. - aj

Oh yeah, actually I really like/care about this issue.
Did you upgrade the processor on the system or something like that?
