For some unknown reason I cannot play files that I recorded from LPs using
the audacity software.  I have done this successfully many time without
problems.  Now I sync these files to my Sandisk player and either the player
freezes-up, skips them.  I have always saved them in.wav format without
problems.  Any ideas?

Do they transfer OK if you use Audacity to convert the WAVs to MP3 ?

Skipping of content on sync could indicate the transcoded file cache
is full (it sets aside a limited amount of space to sync). You can
either delete those files, or expand the cache size if you sync them
repeatedly - see these links for details :

Audacity doesn't convert to WMA VBR or WMA Pro without some
jiggery-pokery, so the second link is fairly unlikely to happen unless
*media player* converted them from WAV to WMA Pro.
