Playing Video shared in Snapfish

My family frequently share video using Snapfish.com.  I am able to hear the
video but the video will not "play".  I downloaded the latest version of
Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP as instructed by the Snapfish
technical support.  They are also unable to figure out why it won't play on
my computer.  It played just fine for them.  Has anybody else had this
problem?  Any suggestions on how to resolve it?  Apparently I'm missing some
setting on my computer.

What file types are these?

The videos are from my daughter's Canon camera.  I'm not really sure what
file type they are but Snapfish only accepts certain types anyway.  It's
funny because when I'm at work I can view and hear the videos just fine, but
when I'm at home I can VIEW them I can only HEAR them, so obviously it is
something to do with my home computer.  Any ideas??

This is from the Snapfish website:  "Videos must be in either MOV, AVI, 3gp
or MPG (motion jpeg) format. They must also be shorter than 10 minutes in
length."  I hope this helps.

What's a sample URL that fails for you?

Try this one.  I can hear the kids playing but nobody is moving.

OK, so an MPEG clip.
So you do see the kids, but the image doesn't move past the initial shot?

What MPEG filters are listed under WMP's Help:About:Technical Support
Information menu tool?

How and why do you have four MPEG decoders present?  That many different
decoders is often problematic.

You might want to use a DirectShow filter tool or maybe DecCheck to set
perhaps the Roxio decoder there as default.

Could you please explain to me in detail how to do this?  I know software, I
don't know this sort of thing!!

It's not an easy task, which is why it's important to be careful what codecs
you install.  Microsoft has historically trusted companies to install
well-behaved codecs.  They haven't always done so.  =(

If you go here:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#mpeg2
there's a pointer to the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility - that's
the "deccheck" I'm referring to - it should be relatively straight-forward
to use, hopefully. =\

Zach, you are being so patient with me and I really appreciate it but I
really need some help here.  I clicked on your link and downloaded the
Utility but now I don't understand what to do.  Please explain to me how to
"decode" this stuff.. .

What happens when you run it?  =)

This isn't easy stuff: this is why I get really agitated when people fob off
bad codecs onto users.  =(

Nothing.  It didn't do anything and now I don't know how to get back into it
to try it again.

I figured out how to go back into the Decoder.  Everytime I click on any
other option it gives me the message that it may not be compatible with WM10.
I downloaded WMP11.

DecCheck is pretty old and doesn't even know about WMP10.  It just means
"WMP in general". =\

I set the Roxio MPEG2 Decoder as the default.  It would NOT uncheck the
original one that it had already checked.  I tried to open my video again and
it sitll won't do it.  Is this a hopeless cause?  If so, just let me know.  I
don't want to keep bugging you!!! :(

This list here corresponds to the actual binaries that are providing MPEG2
support.  If the binaries that you didn't want were renamed to
"whatever.STOPWORKING", they wouldn't work and then the ones you did want to
use should get pulled in.

This is a juvenile approach to filter management which would be better met
by running a DirectShow Filter Manager tool.  This type of action is
probably outside the knowledge of most all non-power users and I would not
expect you to know how to use these tools on your own.

This  gets back to: somehow you got a large number of random MPEG codecs on
your system.  What might have installed those?  Knowing that would likely
correlate to an ability to remove that software to see if you get back to
"normal".
