I recently added a new music file and now somehow all unassigned files are
assigned its Album Cover instead of the Generic music file ( note ). Even
worse all Video files now display this same incorrect Album Art file (
instead of the generic Film Strip Image ). This is really annoying. How can I
get it to go back to displaying the normal generic symbols for unassigned
files.
I have already deleted the file that brought the offending Album Art
image and even deleted the associated Album Art Files ( after painstakingly
searching ) but somehow the problem is still happening!

Please help. There MUST be a way to fix this. This is really
bad....Especially seeing this album art now associated with ALL video files.

This is an unfortunate part of v11 design.

I found a solution THANK GOD. To correct this: Uncheck "Hide Protected
Operating System Files" under VIEW in FOLDER OPTIONS. Then go to the Music
Folder and delete the file "folder.jpg"
After this everything was back to normal.

You may care to monitor the situation. In my experience, WMP will undo what
you've done within 24 hours.

I am happy to report that after more than a day, the odd behavoir has not
reappeared. It seems that deleting the hidden file "folder.jpg" has stopped
Media Player from using a random, recently matched Album Art file as a
generic marker for unattributed music or video files.

What is most surprising, however, is Microsoft's apparent indifference
to the issue. On reading further I have found posts dating back to the summer
of 2004 describing this very same problem. Apparently this has been a "known
issue" for more than two years and over 3 releases of the Media Player
software. And Microsoft's response seems to be a shrug and a "that's too
bad".
