I found a solution THANK GOD. To correct this: Uncheck "Hide Protected
Operating System Files" under VIEW in FOLDER OPTIONS. Then go to the Music
Folder and delete the file "folder.jpg"
After this everything was back to normal.

You may care to monitor the situation. In my experience, WMP will undo what
you've done within 24 hours.

I am happy to report that after more than a day, the odd behavoir has not
reappeared. It seems that deleting the hidden file "folder.jpg" has stopped
Media Player from using a random, recently matched Album Art file as a
generic marker for unattributed music or video files.
What is most surprising, however, is Microsoft's apparent indifference
to the issue. On reading further I have found posts dating back to the summer
of 2004 describing this very same problem. Apparently this has been a "known
issue" for more than two years and over 3 releases of the Media Player
software. And Microsoft's response seems to be a shrug and a "that's too
bad".
