I have just purchased a Media Receiver only to find that all my WMA lossless
files aren't supported by the player! However WMA is, I downloaded Windows
Media Encoder but cannot find an option on there to convert to a file that is
recognised by my player...I tired to convert some files using both VBR and
CBR but neither seem to be recognised!!! Help I really dont want to have to
re- Rip my entire CD collection!!

OK after messing around with my Media Receiver I found the tracks and can
play them..but the Album Info wasnt preserved so despite telling WME the
output file info it didnt transfer....any Ideas on batch converting the
entire CD colection as I can only get it to do one file at a time!

If you can tell us the name of this mystery DMR, I can probably find
the manuals online for you, and tell you what audio formats it
supports. Deal ?

Cheers - Neil

Hi Neil, thanks for your reply. Its the new DSM 520 by D-Link not too bad for
the money $159 from Circuit City. However only has a TV interface so
obviously the TV has to be on to navigate. I found this piece of software
'Easy CD-DA Extractor' which converts files in batch and have used this
output format, wma 9.2/11 at 320kbit/s 44kHz it seemed the best quality aside
from my original lossless and plays on the DMR, unless you could advise
otherwise

cheers
Neil

Yeah that sounds like an excellent deal ! For comparison the Roku
M1001 which just broke here, was about £200 GBP, that's around $350
and it's an audio-only device :-o Soo much for EU pricing sheesh

The product manual for the 520 says in supported audio formats:

• MP3 (up to 320 kbps)
• WAV & AIFF (AIFF files must be encoded in PCM format
• WMA (Does not support WMA lossless, WMA Pro)
• MPEG 1 and MPEG 2 - Audio using the file extension
• OGG Vorbis - Audio using the .ogg extension

320kbps should provide pretty good fidelity as WMA or MP3. However,
noting that your player supports Ogg, you might want to do a listening
test of the 3 formats at the same 320kbps to see which you prefer.

That's not the same as formal waveform testing, but actually as you're
the listener it's paramount that because of the different ways of
compressing audio, that you choose one which *you* like, rather than
which somebody else recommends ;-)

You could have a look over the Ogg FAQ to find out more background
http://www.vorbis.com/faq/  where you'll also discover that CDEx (a
similar product to CD-DA but free) can convert to Ogg, MP3 and WMA
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/

So with that tool to hand, why not spend an afternoon doing a
listening test - encode say 3 sample genres to different formats at
the same bitrate, make sure the audio is pretty challenging with lots
of quiet and loud parts, different levels of bass, midrange and top.

I think 320kbps is the top end for WMA files, and in WMP only up to
192kbps so the player isn't appropriate for encoding your files
directly to the highest bitrates your device supports.

The product manual also says "WMA Pro files are currently not
supported" however that leaves the door open to a possible firmware
update which you'd probably see here if it became available

Thanks Neil, sounds sporty for the Roku..over here its $179 which works out
at about 95GBP !! maybe I should send you some over! Where in the UK are you?
Im from Southampton but left 3 years ago for Hawaii...

Will try the auditions and see which I prefer, havent heard about the ogg
format but will see how it sounds! I have top of the range Denon audio and
home theatre stuff so this should really show any short comings in any
format..

Oh haha Bristol Uk. That's a very kind thought but I've already got
one - unfortunately the audio output went titsup last week (still
under warranty) but it's a pain cause otherwise the thing appears to
work just fine - all the EQ display, network, remote etc etc are fine
- just no audio output and it's not muted :-p

Yeah if you could let us know about your informal listeng tests it
would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

After posting the last message I realised that CD-DA also supports Ogg
so you may as well stay with that tool if you're happy with it so far.

PS - Denon eh ?

Be careful before you upgrade WMP to 11 if you haven't already -
several people are having problems with apparently "plays for sure"
Denon receivers....

Cheers - Neil

I need to get some advice on where to get a decent cup of coffee in Bristol.
On each of my visits there I end up with some dispirited boiling muck. I may
have to resort to tea.

Well if you're in the area Mike, look me up and I'll sort you out with
a proper pint of beer instead. The hot drinks as you've noticed are
pretty crappy, but once it's been sterilised by conversion to beer
it's usually OK (and tastes better ;-)

Cheers - Neil
