I don't know whether my fix will help or not. I just upgraded my
motherboard and was encountering the same issue. Nothing else seemed
to be working so I renamed my drm folder, closed IE, and then revisited
the web site to upgrade the security component - it worked. I'm
guessing that I've lost some rights to any licenses issued under the
prior DRM files - guess I'll find out soon.
The steps I took:
1) made the DRM file visible: (Start, my computer, tools, folder
options, click "show hidden files" and uncheck "hide protected
operating system files (recommended)")
2) found the DRM file under c:, documents and settings, all users.
3) renamed "DRM" to "Backupdrm" by right clicking.

I've reset the registry, uninstalled all the way down to WMP 8, tried all the
DRM renaming tricks, made the security site trusted, made sure javascript was
allowed, spent 4 hours on the phone with napster tech support running every
reset tool they had, tried every DRM removal/reset program I could find.
The stupid button is still greyed out, I still can't play, stream, watch or
do anything else with WMP or any other software that relies on this DRM.
The only thing I can think of is to re-format my hard drive and start over.
Which I can't do, as it's a company laptop and I don't have a copy of the
ghost image they started with.
Is there any way to completely strip out DRM and start over?

snooping though the page source code for the licence site, i was able to discover that all the page does is checks your media player version and then navagates you to the correct site wich will then open media player and start to download the update.
manually going to the site will have the same effect:
type this in your address bar:

hope it helps you, solved it for me
Cheers

What newbiedoo wrote worked for me. An email reply from Microsoft told me I
had a problem with IE - but what newbiedoo wrote worked.

Excellent! Worked perfectly!
Only thing I had trouble with was Step number 2, I had to search fo
"DRM" in All Users I soon found it and renamed and it and it worked ;)

Alright i've been reading online about various ways to fix this dam DRM
problem but i cant even get that far. I've already added to my trusted
sites and i'm trying the renaming trick. only problem is that i keep
getting any error message everytime i try to rename the DRM file.
It says:
The Registry Edit cannot rename DRM. Error while renaming key.
Does anyone know what this means and how i can remedy the situation?
