When I use an a web site using IE 6 via https and click on a relative link to
a wav file, WMP 10 starts up says "A security problem occured".
The developer says it works fine via http.

Does WMP not share the same https connection with IE?  If this is the case
whay does IE start up WMP for http sessions?

Is WMP incompatible with IE in https?

Can you sugest a workaround that does not involve changing the EI/WMP config?

It appears to be a known issue http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885136

At this point, I would be sniffing the http session using a tool like
Fiddler http://www.fiddlertool.com/fiddler/ or Etherial.

As you realise, the https server is on a physically distinct IP
address from the http server. There could be an issue with server
configuration - working fine over http is misleading because of the
differing server configuration for SSL

Note also the problem symptoms and checks suggested in this thread
