I have set up my MP3 data in Windows Media Player on my laptop, and I want to
move the Library to a desktop.  All music is on an External Hard Drive (drive
G).  I cannot locate the Library file.  Is it a hidden file?  What is the
filename and where is it so I can copy it and move it?

Thanks!

It's on your local (C:) drive - see this article :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925718

Replace %userprofile% with your user name on the PC, so if your
username is "rpmdude" then it'd be at

C:\Documents and Settings\rpmdude\Application Data\Microsoft\Media
Player  (on XP) or

C:\Users\rpmdude\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player (on Vista)

Thank you very much for the reply.  Unfortunately, it did not resolve my
problem.

I do not have a folder called "Application Data"  C:\Users\bill\Application
Data\Microsoft\Media Player does not exist.  The only folders I have under my
user profile are: Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Links,
Music, Pictures, Saved Games, Searches, Videos.

???

Thanks.

I can't tell from your post - are you on XP ? That would be the Vista
path you mentioned below. If you're on XP, go to windows explorer,
you'll need to show hidden and system folders - on the menus :

Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Show hidden files and folders

On Vista to do that, click the Organise button (top left in folder
view) then Folder and Search options, then View tab (and the same as
above, Show hidden files and folders)

In fact on my PC, that folder is "AppData" instead of Application Data
which is documented on the microsoft support site.

THANKS A LOT!  I'm getting close with your help!

I am using Vista.

I have C:\Users\bill\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player

Do I copy all of the folders and files to my desktop in order to have the
same set-up on the desktop?  Under "Media Player," I have folders named Art
Cache, MTVN, napster, Sync Playlists, and I have 14 files.

Thank you so very much for your help!

Bill

I think I'm getting clearer what you're up to now.
Well, the library would go in the corresponding folder on the desktop.
The media library is held in a file ending in .wmdb, that's the only
one you need here.

However it's quite likely the path to the actual media files will be
different on the second machine. In that case, all the media file
paths held by the library would be wrong, so WMP wouldn't be able to
locate them.

The outside chance is that you can rename the existing library file on
the desktop (so you don't lose that copy), and copy across the library
database from the laptop - this will only work if the external drive
when attached to the desktop is *also* drive G, and not any other
letter
