DVDx is what I usually use to create backups of importand DVDs :
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvdx/

There's a free version (there) and a minimally expensive full version
which has extra features. One way to run that is to run WMP first to
"unlock" the DVD drive, then run DVDx to convert to (e.g.) AVI or WMV
content.

Writing DVDs usually incurs some cost - you need a program which can
create the MPEG2 video content and the VOB folders, and another which
can actually write the VOB folders to the blank disk.

Nero 7 can do both thes steps, a cheap version of Nero 6 can do the
basic write to disk, and video editing software lilke ULead video
studio and DVD studio can edit and convert to VOB folders ready for
burning in standalone dvd player compatible format.

WMP doesn't have any of these features, in case you were wondering.

HTH
