Why Window media is inferior to other media?

Every time I play a download on the internet from a friend my computer is
forced to use windows media. The problem is that the quality of viewing is
inferior to other media viewers such as Quicktime etc. When ever I open up
something with window media the screen is very faded out and not very clear
with it being very fuzzy and hard to view. How come other viewing modalities
are much clearer?

The second question is how come I am unable to view media with other
outlets? For intstance My machine now refuses to let me use some software
from nero unless I specifically go out and access it. When I  put a CD in and
it asks me if I want to oopen it in nero, when I click on that option, I get
a error message telling me that this not an available option. I had heard
that windows was getting very territorial but this is rididulous. NO matter
what I have to open all media in windows media...I want to know if there is
any other options?

HOw can I get keep windows media under control and also how can I improve
its quality of viewing?

so there is nothing wrong with my computer...besides other media outlets seem
to work much better than the one with windows... againg thanks for you
time....

The problem is simply that most producers uses WMV as low band-low quality
streaming, because it performs much better than competition at lower
bitrates.
If you encode a WMV9 stream at a decent bitrate it will suddenly look
crystal clear.
Check www.microsoftusernetwork.com/forum to see some samples.

Point of Order :

Actually, Real Player audio *and* video codecs perform much better
than windows media at low bitrates. And for audio Ogg Vorbis outstrips
them all at low bitrates ;-)

Well, i wouldn't call their pastel filtering method much better Neil ;-)

Sure it is - try expanding the resultant video to +25-33% of the
original size. It has none of the nasty pixel-block artefacts that WMP
gets at 30-64kbps video, and the picture is stable, less shifting
between frames. Far better for dialup users ;-)

Cheers - Neil

thanks for your help...but what should I do about the problem? If I do as
Zarax suggests will that solve my problem? Also How do I get window to be
more responsive to other media and not keep blocking my attempst to use other
media?

Which bitrates and resolutions are you using?

I want to thank you for giving me the forum site and I have been looking at
it to hopefully find something that will help me with this. I am unsure what
bitrates I have and am not sure how to check for this...I wish there was a
newbe  section where we could read these things so I do not have to take up
your time with this. On some forums they have some general things posted that
gets you up to speed so you can ask some intelligent questions without being
repetitive. But maybe it is there and I am missing it due to my ignorance of
the language etc. I was going to post a question there as I see you are the
moderator...
...
my pixel is 1024 by 768 ....I am sure my video card is extremly fast as it
is 5900 xt from Aopen....it normal rate is around 300 with a memory of 700
but it can be overclocked to around 440 and 740 memory...

I hope this helps...

Hmm, do you mean you want to improve the quality of the videos you see on
the internet, right?
If yes then it's not possible, there is no way to significantly improve
decoding quality.
I was rather thinking about content creation, which is the side where you
decide the final quality.
Also, the forum i pointed you at is specifically aimed to newbees, so there
are no "stupid" questions there :-)
