Hi there!

Dont know for sure if this is the right newsgroup, but I'll give it a shot

Received a audio-file with the MP5 extension. Never heard of it and so
havent all my media players or my OS.

Im sure it an audio file, Hex Work Shop mentioned the song and artist at the
end. However in the leading header no file-type or mime type was specified.

Anyone heard of this extension? And most important how do listen, open or
even convert the file to lets say MP3.

TIA

The best thing to do is ask the person who sent it to you. A file's
extension is not an accurate indication of its file-type.

I know for sure its an audio file. Taken from a cd...

It might be of a Music Management System. Which play encrypted files...

Still I would like to learn more of this extension, filetype and most of all
listen to the file. ;-)

TNX for replying though!

The information above doesn't make it sound like you really know for sure.

MP5 is used as a video game file extension.

Again, the person who sent you the file should be able to give you all
the information you need.

I know for sure its audio... My Hex Editor said so... Ill be happy to send
you the screendumps ;-) or the actual file

I received 2 files named: 0BD8DE95253241CF-03.mp5 and
03B378AAEED6F7C2-12.mp5. My best guess for now the *.MP5 file, noted the
name, is some sort of encrypted audio file. Where I think ~-03 and ~-12
stands for the tracknumber. The leading 16 characters (~) before the
tracknumber could be a (MD5?)hash or some other encryption key.

Some Music Mangement Systems, as used in cafés, bars, malls and so on, got
their own hardware. The manufacturer of the MMS or its distibuters often
provides the service -on a contract base- to provide the audio -on CD,
online or for example tru broadcast-. In this case it would be very hard to
determin, or convert open or listen, the file. Only because the key is
needed to play the audio in combination with the hardware, which often has a
key of its own.

And reading the above Im more puzzeled, I just want to convert the file both
ways...

Please ne1 to the rescue?

TIA

Your hex editor shows two strings in the file. If that means it's an
audio file, then all my Word documents are music as well.

Why are you so reluctant to ask the source of these files for the
information?
