I am getting several messages (circa 6 a day) supposedly from the MS Support
centre saying that my PC has been invaded by spyware, is running slow etc and
offering to run a check by downloading 'SpywareSecure-trial-setup.exe' from
www.Spyware-secure.com.
I am very suspicious about this as I cannot cancel out of the screens it
produces and have to use task manager to get rid of the application.  It also
seems to find the same 45 occurences of spyware (despite me running Nortons
spyware regularly).
Am I safe to run this (Is it actually FROM Microsoft) or is it yet another
problem waiting to happen
Anyone else had this problem ?

Don't run this!
Spyware Secure is just another rogue anti-spyware program.
For removal try this:
SuperAntispyware - Free
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html
After the software is updated, it is suggested scanning the system in Safe
Mode.

Then use:
CCleaner - Free
Cleans temporary internet files, cookies, history, recent urls, application
MRUs, etc. ...
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
If Windows Defender is utilized go to Applications, under  Utilities
uncheck "Windows Defender" (so it won't delete the history of WD)

Consider dumping Norton; There are better (free) alternatives available

Good luck :)

The messages are NOT coming from "MS Support centre" but your machine may
well be compromised.

Do NOT click on any of those links!

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities).  HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert.  **Post your log to
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

All Microsoft Security Products would be show here
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx

and such that name should be listed among them on the right hand side.

Anyhow Formatting should be your last option for the concern you have on
hand

Use free security apps from microsoft ( www.microsoft.com/defender )
other product for your use and possible replacement for norton Microsoft or
Trend Micro or Kaspersky
