Sorry for the delay.
Try this: Open Taskmanager/Processes Tab and look for the ehtray.exe
process. If it is there, right click this process and select End Process
from the menu. Test the screen saver again.
If no joy, take a look at the following articles and try the fixes there.

Thank you so much for this information, I have been nearly tearing my hair
out to find a solution to what seemed to be such a simple problem. Have done
as suggested and will now test my screen saver, which has never activated
since I purchased my new PC with Vista Home Premium pre-installed last month.
Cheers Diane

My screen saver won't work and I get a pop-up message"A Monitor Rule was
detected for the application system". I'm brand new to Vista and would
appreciate any help. I am using a Microsoft wireless mouse. Thanks

This is a configuration error message usually initiated by Norton Internet
Security. I don't have any other information except that it is probably a
setting in the Norton Firewall. You need to contact Norton support to
resolve this.

Open Control Panel and go to Personalization/Screen Saver. Use the drop down
menu to select Photos. Click the Settings Button, click teh Browse Button
and select the folder where the pictures are located. You can also select
the speed and theme for the display in that dialog box. Click Apply/OK.

-- Ronnie,
I followed your directions with the Task Manager, and voila my screen saver
is working. I don't know much about computers and I was frustrated because
my beautiful screen saver of my daughter's wedding worked fine in XP. I also
rebooted after I changed things.....Thank you, thank you!

Hi Ronnie,
I am sad to say that the screen saver only worked for a few minutes and then
went black. :o( It not only happens with my photos, but also with the
screen savers that came with my computer. I just bought this computer this
week with Windows Vista. This is very frustrating. Calling the Computer
Geeks at Best Buy is a big joke. They never answer the phone. Seeing that
it still doesn't work, should I deselect the End Process from the Task
Manager and reverse the procedure that I did hoping to get the screen saver?
If I don't, will it have any negative effects on my computer? I don't have
a wireless mouse, it's a Logitech, whatever that is. I would appreciate
anything else you might suggest to fix this.
Thank you,
Rosy
PS: Does Bill Gates ever answer his phone? :o)

Hi Rosy,
By default, the monitor is set to turn off after a certain amount of time.
You may need to either adjust the timeout, or stop it from turning off
altogether.
Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Power Options. Select "Change plan
settings" for your power plan, then adjust the time before Windows turns off
the display. You can adjust the timeout for Sleep there too.

Hi "Not Plain" Jane,
I followed your directions and so far so good. It does make sense that it
would be the monitor that went off and not the screensaver! We shall
see....Thank you.

Are you sure you had all of the processes displayed in the Task Manager?
Stsrt the Task Manager and click the Processes Tab at the top. At the bottom
of the screen, click the "Show processes for all users" button. This will
display everything that is running. If you do find the ehtray process, right
click that process and select End Process from the menu.
If you still cannot find that process, take a look at the following support
articles for further troubleshooting.

There seems to be a lot of this going around. I first started out with Vista
Business which was the upgrade from XP Pro. Everything worked fine at first,
but then the screen saver stopped working. I've eliminated everything I can
think of and there aren't any wireless devices involved when not at the
office. I've since reloaded my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with Vista Ultimate
and the problem still persists.
When I use the laptop at work I connect it to an external monitor and
wireless "Logitec" mouse and keyboard. When at home or out of the office I'm
using the touch pad most of the time, but do occassionally use the microsoft
wireless mouse that came with the laptop from Dell.
As near as I can tell this problem didn't present itself until I started
using the external display at work with the laptop. I was very pleased with
the manner in which Vista handles the transition between the office and home,
but the undesired side-effect is that the screen saver now doesn't work.
I've done LOTS of googling on this subject and the nearest I've come so far
is the settings in Windows Mobility Center for Presentation settings which
are all unchecked and this feature is currently in a state of "turned off".
Still my gut tells me this is where the problem exists to some degree. I just
don't know what to do about it.
