In particular, when saving an email attachement, in this case a word file,
the default location is the Documents folder. How could I change this in
Vista so that whenever I do a Save As, it points to my, lets say, Temp folder
instead?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I have the same question, myself, not just regarding email attachments, but
for other programs as well. I assume that the way various programs
determine where the default directory varies -- some from saved preferences,
some by looking at registry entries, some from environment variables, some
hard-coded, etc.
Any guidance in this area would be greatly appreciated. It is an annoyance
(and error-prone) to have to walk a directory tree everytime you want to
open a file or save a file.

The saved location defaults to the last location you saved an attachment to.

Bob,
Remebering the last used location works for MS Word and other programs
with similar behavior. Microsoft Works always reverts to "Documents".
Some programs allow default locations to be saved as preferences.
Are there standard common registry entries where one could look in order
to set the default locations for programs that check system settings in
order to determine file locations? Environment variables?

to do this, from an email with attachment open the email, open the
attachment, do a save as, when the screen opens, go to click on
organize, then properties, click on location tab - and change the path
you want it to save to there.
