I believe in the Control Panel you can find this information. Open up the
control panel and under help, select System Information. What you want to
look for is the ForceWare version number.
Now, mind you, this is me looking at it from XP on my laptop. My Vista
machine has an ATI card and Half Life 2 screams at full detail at 1280x1024.
When I had an nVidia card, I ran into a multitude of issues, such as videos
not displaying correctly (such as in Neverwinter Nights) and poor performance
compared to ATI, so I switched to an ATI X1950 Pro and I've been happy ever
since.
The issue is definitely the drivers. nVidia is still working on them. It
just seems that ATI has a better set of drivers in my honest opinion.
Otherwise, there's not much that can be done other than constantly checking
the nVidia web site to see if they've updated their drivers lately.

They don't make it very easy to find.
You can go to Control panel, and then nVidia control panel, then go to help
and choose System information. The first line in the right pane is forceware
version, which should be something like 101.65 or 111.41

101.41, is technically the latest Beta release from nVidia. The Official
release is 100.65 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_100.65.html)
If you want to live a little on the edge, you can download. some of the
other beta drivers at http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1600
