dvd drive wont play anything but dvds

I have a toshiba laptop running vista 32 bit home basic. My dvd rom combo
drive wont let me play anything but dvds. i have tried removeing the filters,
updating the drivers, the device manager says its working fine, no conflics.
but the disks work in the acer laptop with vista!! confused ?? Iam

Hi,

So I'm guessing that it won't read CD media? If so, you might want to try a
lens cleaner disk. Different lasers are used for the differing media, and if
the lens cleaner doesn't work then there is a good chance that the CD laser
has failed.
