Hi, I recently purchased a HP C4180 All-in-One printer for use on my Vista
home Premium 32-bits laptop. But I don't succeed in installing the printer.
Everytime that I have to plug in the USB-cable, Vista recognizes the printer
model, but doesn't find the drivers. I've already concacted the HP customer
center, and many people tried to help me, but without succes. At last, I
tried to install the printer on our XP-computer, and this worked very well,
without problems.
I have to say that these drivers were installed with the XP-installation
disk of HP. The other cd that came with my printer was a vista-drivers cd.
At last, one of the people who helped me, said it could be a problem with
the USB-cable. The length was alright (1.80 meters), and it worked on XP, but
they said that Vista is more sensitive for different cables...
I use this cable for my Maxtor hard drive too, on this laptop, without any
problem caused by Vista.
Does anybody can confirm that this is possible a cable problem? I don't know
what to do anymore...

It's doubtful it's a cable problem.
Download and install the drivers from the HP website BEFORE you install the
printer.

This didn't work either. I did a clean up level 4 from the installation
cd-rom of HP, and after the reboot I installed the drivers from the link. But
now again, Vista recognizes the model and searches for drivers, but doesn't
find them. Other possibilities that I haven't tried? I purchased this printer
3 days ago and it still isn't working...

Try the process again in Safe Mode.
What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems.

I have a HP C6180, and never had any problems with setting it up under Vista
Ultimate.
When Vista finds, you hit cancel...
Then run your HP Setup Disk or the latest D/Ls...
I only install HP Solution Center and the Essentials.. I do not install the
auto-updates etc..
I have set it up earlier for USB,, but later I changed it to use the
Network.
You can NOT use both .. only USB or LAN... If you have a router, I'd
suggest you use the LAN..

Thanks for al the tips, but still nothing works. I just use the Windows
Firewall, I tried to installe with the firewall shut down, and my virus
scanner (McAfee) shut down too...but nothing happened. I install the drivers
on the cd (or the site, I really tried everything), but when I have to
connect the printer, Vista simply says it's unable to find suitable drivers,
nor on the cd, nor installed on the computer. Whatever I try, I get everytime
the same result, the same problem, the same messages, which are saying that
there are no drivers installed!
I've solved a lot of problems with computers by trial and error, but it
seems that I'll not be able to use this printer, I simply don't find a
solution...
Other ideas are still welcome of course, thanks again in advance!

It sounds to me like you don't have Vista drivers for this printer. HP is
notorious for not updating drivers.

But why shouldn't I have the vista drivers? I recieved in the box a XP and
other OS driver cd, and a cd with drivers especially for vista too... And
when that didn't work, I also tried to install the printer with the vista
drivers downloaded from the HP website...
but now I tried to manually search drivers, I went to the directory with the
drivers, and vista found drivers for the C4100 series. But when I clicked it,
vista tried to install this driver but said: this driver is not digitally
signed or something like that. could that be the problem or is it just
another error?

I had to reformat my computer and reinstalled Vista Business service pack
one. Whereas my c 6180 printer work perfectly before using the cable I now
find it impossible to install that printer using the cable because it is not
recognized by Vista. I have been able to set it up through the router and
everything works perfectly except for the fact that if I want to do a scan of
a document I have to scan to USB flash drive and then copy it to the computer
which is not really all that bad. My main problem now is that I cannot
connect my camera to the computer unless I install the printer using the
cable. Before finally installing and using the router I attempted to install
it umpteen times with the same result.
Any advice?
Looking forward to hearing from you
