Will Vista ship in both 32- and 64-bit versions?

Will Vista ship in both 32- and 64-bit versions? I have read that the Vista
Starter Edition (intended for emerging markets) will ship in a 32-bit
version only. The descriptions of the other 6 versions do not specifically
say what kind of CPU is required, so I have wondered if they are all 64-bit
only.

Thanks,
Gene

Most versions will have a 32-bit and an x64 version.  You may be correct
about starter, but that would be the only one I could think of that might be
32-bit only.  Microsoft is working hard on x64 adoption but it is my feeling
that it won't be main stream until the release after Windows Vista.

All Editions currently, not determined yet, will be 64-bit except for
Starter Edition, this is all subject to change of course. Another thing that
has changed is the process of integrating both instruction code on one disk
allowing the user to choose which version of a Vista edition he/she wish to
install.

It seems that if you want say the home edition of Vista 32 and 64 bit, you
will have to buy both separately. This was confirmed in a recent Windows
chat.

I'm pretty sure that they'll have support for 32-bit machines for most of
the other editions, because the majority of machines, although older still
run on 32-bit processors.

I think Windows Codename Vienna after that, will be run only for 64-bit, but
that's heading off towards 2010-2012 ish time, so don't worry yet :o)

I would try and avoid mentioning this where possible, since nothing is
concrete on this yet. Saying it will be purely 64-bit means its a major
release, when Jenny Lam in channel9 interview called it Vista + 1 which
means its probably a nice upgrade to Vista.

Oh I know Andre :o) This is why I said "I think".

I mean, think about it though, the way that technology is progressing and
*especially* 64-bit stuff (you should know!!) then you can pretty much see
it anyway. Obviously I can't say (and not many other people can) say that
*Vienna WILL be only 64-bit* but it's just a very good guess really.

We'll have to wait and see :o) But yeh, as you said, nothing can be set in
stone and I thank you for bringing that one back up.

Interesting. There were some reports on CNET that Jim Allchin said MS
dropped the idea of
"one disc, all versions" and went for this Windows Anytime Upgrade campaign,
so that you don't have to install all the bits. But maybe you meant that
it's still "one disc, all versions" but you only get to pick the bits to
install, and when you upgrade, you put in the CD and install the extra bits
again.

Regards.
