I have an Acer laptop with the standard Realtek AC '97 builtin sound card
and, while it works, Vista 5384 continuously pops up an error message saying
that the driver for it is not supported by Vista. This is very annoying. Any
suggestions/similar experiences?

I suggest you will install Vista compliant beta driver available from here.

I had the same problem. After I installed Vista build 5472,5 yesterday I let
Vista go for the Microsoft site that offered to install a Vista driver from
Microsoft for the AC97 system
