Yes you will need to boot the machine and enter the BIOS. A good thing to do
is make a note of any changes you make (and what sections of the BIOS they
were made in) so that, should any problems arise, you can change them back.
Another example is the PC waking up when the telephone rings. Disabling the
Wake on LAN will cure that problem too.
The BIOS can terrify most people so don't make changes for change sake. Make
the wrong move and your system will become unbootable. My advice is to check
the BIOS ( I can't tell you exactly where the wake on lan can be found
because I don't know what BIOS your machine is using. It also depends on how
old the BIOS is too.) If you are not sure that you are disabling the right
thing the don't disable it; instead come back to the newsgroup and explain
exactly what you have done (what section of the BIOS you have looked in,
what option is available for the specific BIOS application) Someone can then
always advice you.

We are talking about 'land line' phones here, not mobiles. Quite a few
people rely upon a dial up modem in order to send/receive faxes. If your PC
is 'off' when a fax arrived then you couldn't receive the fax. The BIOS,
therefore, contained a 'wake on ring' option which. effectively, bought the
pc to life when the phone rang, even if you hadn't got a fax. In order to
prevent this it was necessary to disable the 'wake on ring' option in the
BIOS, so you might like to check the BIOS for this option too, especially if
you have noticed that the pc does come alive when the phone rings.
My current machine is only a few months old and I haven't locate a 'wake on
ring' option, although the wake on lan is still there. However, my last
machine was three years old and that did have the option to 'wake on ring'
in the BIOS.
