RG - 25 Feb 2008 14:16 GMT I'm trying to send a quote from Simply accounting but cannot do so since I've switched from Outlook express to Windows mail. I get a MAPI compatible error. What can I do to fix this problem

However, it sounds like in your case WinMail man not have all its defaults. Click Start | Default Programs and make sure Windows Mail has all its defaults.

RG - 25 Feb 2008 15:10 GMT Thanks so much for your prompt reply. I checked my default programs and everything seems to be as they should. What do you suggest I do now? This is a new computer system so I haven't upgraded my e-mail program or accounts. Everything is new so you would think that outlook express would have all files need included with the new program wouldn't you? This is obviously an ongoing problem so do they have a repair program or anything?

It has a newer email program instead, Windows Mail.
To get full MAPI use, you still have to install an extra cost software package. The Office packages that include Outlook will handle this, but only the versions 2003 and later are fully Vista compatible. Outlook 2002 will run under Vista, but with a few problems.

RG - 27 Feb 2008 13:39 GMT Hi Frank, I'm still trying to solve my problem. As an update - I can email I just can't send an email from my simply accounting program. So does this mean that there's a problem with my accounting program?
Anyway, I've tried to do what you suggested but I'm not sure how to save what I'm copying. Do I have to save it in a particular program such as Word or what? I apologize but I'm not a computer whiz so I need specifice step by step instructions.
I did go to "Associate a file type of protocol with a program" and the MailTo protocol isn't there but it is there under "set your default program" then "choose defaults for this program" and the box is checked. Not sure if this info is of any use to you or not.

I don't know anything about your accounting program, but if it wants a Full MAPI mail program you're out of look unless you get something like Outlook. Like Outlook Express, Windows Mail is just a Simple MAPI program.

RG - 27 Feb 2008 15:21 GMT Thanks Frank for your help. I'll have to try that route.

Gary VanderMolen - 26 Feb 2008 03:44 GMT In addition to "Windows Mail (News)", Default Programs should have an entry for just "Windows Mail". Try the following fix: http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/220/1/Windows-Mail-missing-from-the-defaul t-programs-listing.html

Gary VanderMolen - 27 Feb 2008 08:15 GMT How can you say that all your defaults are OK when Windows Mail apparently does not have the MAILTO protocol default?
Were you able to find the MAILTO default assignment by going to Default Programs, "Associate a file type or protocol..." and scrolling down to the bottom of that screen where all the protocol assignments are shown?
As others have already told you, you can't install OE in Vista.

Gary VanderMolen - 27 Feb 2008 20:57 GMT I assume your MailTo protocol is still missing? (You did not respond to my previous post.) If so, try this: Open Default Programs, click "Set program access and computer defaults." Click Custom, and select Windows Mail. Click OK.
Did this restore the MailTo protocol?

Sorry for my slow response but had to leave the office early. Just got your post and I have done as you suggested and guess what I now have my "MailTo" protocol. However, I am still having the same problem with my accounting program and am unable to email from that program. I'm thinking there's a problem between that program and Vista with regards to compatibility. Will let you know what I find out. I do appreciate your help.

Gary VanderMolen - 29 Feb 2008 06:22 GMT Now that you have the MailTo protocol back, did you make sure it was assigned to Windows Mail?
Your hunch may well be correct in that your older accounting program is just not compatible with Vista's way of doing things.

I've created a mail merge in Word 2007 (on a Vista computer, had to buy Microsoft Office, which I didn't realise didn't come with Outlook!) and now at the last stage, the email button or email command is greyed out.
After checking help is says I need a MAPI comp email program - am I right in assuming that the 'simple' MAPI compatible Windows Mail won't be up to the task? Or is there a setting I've missed?
I have made sure that MailTo points to Windows Mail.
Fingers crossed someone can help!

The most common MAPI provider it can use is Outlook, which comes with some but not all versions of Microsoft Office.
You might want to check if you have the option to upgrade to such a version of Microsoft Office without adding its full price to what you have already paid.

Rob - 27 Feb 2008 03:22 GMT I have looked for days for the reason I could not send email from Word and Explore and could not mailto from websites and then I came across your post. I downloaded and merged the file, went to default programs and made sure all three boxes were checked, and now all works fine. Thanks for relieving my great frustration with this aspect of Vista and Windows Mail!
