In Windows Mail, when I try to open an attatchment, mail freezes completely,
and I have to run task manager to shut it down and restart.

sorry, wish I had an answer, I am having the same trouble.  I have tried to
find where I can fix the attachment issue, but this is not as user friendly
as XP.  Hope some one can help

What if any antivirus programs, antispyware programs, firewall programs,
and other security programs do you have?  Problems like these are often
due to interference from a security program.

For some antivirus programs, just disabling part or all of the program
is seldom enough to help with the problems they cause in Windows
Mail.  What antivirus program(s) do you have?

What if any antivirus programs do you have?  Some of them tend to cause
assorted problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

Then I'll give you the same question to answer:

What if any antivirus programs do you have?  Some of them tend to cause
assorted problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

disable.

Both Trend Micro antivirus and Spysweeper are known to cause problems
with Windows Mail. As a minimum, you would have to configure those
programs not to scan emails. If no improvement, try uninstalling them
one at a time. Reboot before testing Windows Mail for improvement.

Windows Mail does not accommodate Hotmail accounts.
Windows Live Mail (WLM) does. So are you running WLM instead of
Windows Mail? If so, the advice about disabling email scanning in your
security programs still holds, but you should not need to uninstall.

If you continue to have problems with WLM, post in the WLM newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop .
